First, METAL from my brother JY, AKA James Young of Styx. If you're expecting Styx stuff--stay away. This will blow your speakers, pal!
This cannot be happening--Tal Wilkenfeld is about...21, but was 19ish here taking on Jeff Beck like a pro. Move over Meshell, the bass goddess from Down Under has stolen your crown--the solo in the first number here...I still cannot believe this little Aussie girl can DO this:
And...POLISH FUNK? Yep! Check it out--first Sistars, then...Sofa. Outta be a law against funkin' this good:
Okay, who is this OTHER Aussie kid Sam Sparro and how come he sounds like D'Angelo, Prince and George Clinton in a saucy gay package? He is now my hero...and his song Clingwrap, if I can find it, WILL be posted here as my unofficial personal anthem. For now...here's "Cottonmouth" and "Black and Gold."
I attended The Who's amazing Rock Honors tribute taping and while they rocked the hell out of everything they did...it was this moment at the very end that made me cry. Roger sang more passionately than I'd seen in years, and the song itself is such a beautiful tribute to the adventure they've experienced that I couldn't help but break down. Also, just after he sang it, he came forward and caressed the beaming face of a chronically ill friend of mine who I had helped meet him the day before--long, beautiful story that. Suffice it to say, she's still on cloud nine and I couldn't be more grateful to Roger for being so gentle and loving with her. Here's the best song of the night...for all those reasons:
Below, back to my REAL roots, from whence all that soul derives. After a life long search, I've found my African ancestral tribe, the Bubi or "Bocheboche" (Their own name for themselves) of Bioko Island, in Equatorial Guinea. And to my astonishment, they had, for a time, a very promising "girl group," whose music is all over YouTube and elsewhere. Here they are--Las Hijas del Sol (ours is the only Spanish speaking tribe in West Africa--very odd, that):
Music
Next, a taste of vintage Who with lead singer Roger Daltrey, the man they ALL tried to be--prototype for Plant and almost all who came after. Wish I had a better version, but this is from their historic Woodstock performance, after which Hendrix, who'd been touring with them, burned his guitar trying to live up to what had gone before:

Aside from Moonbird, for which I have searched for over 40 years...the edgy stuff, the foreign stuff--Dog, Day Afternoon and most Pacino still electrifies me, all the way to Angels in America. Loved Closer, another Nichols-directed film, too. Loved Spanglish to death, mad for Shopgirl, The Door in the Floor, The Dreamers, Velvet Goldmine, 25th Hour, Love the Hard Way, or...even the old gold like The Philadelphia Story, East of Eden, everything Valentino ever did and Nosferatu. Just save me, please, from Hollywood...

About me: This...is me:
Former rock crit, (Creem, Rolling Stone, Sun Times), current script diva and Queen Mother. Currently a script reader and developer for Epiphany Pictures, I've been taken underwing by the amazing and endlessly patient Blake Snyder (Blank Check, Nuclear Family--book: Save the Cat), and get the occasional "boot in the___" from David H. (Slackers/American Pie2) Steinberg as well. I've written several screenplays, and semi'd in the Chesterfield Writer's Project, Project Greenlight (twice) and the more recent NBC/Bravo Situation: Comedy competition. I've lived as wife and mother on the Hopi reservation with my Hopi artist ex for eight years, and have a stunning half-Hopi daughter who wants to be a producer--so she can buy Mommy's scripts (JUST kidding). At present, I live in the wild Southwest, just outside of Tucson, in ranch country, where it's still at least partly untamed...kinda like me

Who I'd like to meet: Met 'em all, thanks! But the King of Pop is on my mind right now. First, HIS BEST PERFORMANCE EVER--1995, MTV Music Awards. Watch Janet's face at the end--that says it all. Then, the 1983 Motown 25th anniversary performance that changed everything, forever. And then, here he is "In the Closet" with Naomi Campbell, the ONE time I think he managed to look like a sexy grown man. And after that...a tiny snippet of my bro' JY's opening song, Miss America, from this summer's Styx/REO/38 Special tour--yes, that's me whoopin' it up! And after you've rocked out with JY, move on to find out why this parrot is now my rock idol supreme--watch this little sucker headbang like a pro.
And a reception surprise from the best man and his "crewe" at another wedding--look out Michael Jackson, this is a REAL Thriller:

Hope you are having a great day, if you missed it Shawn is in the works of a tribute book. I know you would have beautiful words to add. Michael was Loved and Admired the world over and still is. Michael touched the lives of many, like no other human being in our lifetime. So little is focused on the Positive side of Michael nor what his fans/supporters are going through even now. Be a part of HIStory and let us set the record straight for Michael. A book is in the works where your thoughts, poems, letters or what have you, will be brought together to show the world that Michael was and still is endeared by his fans/supporters and we have not forgotten. Michael will forever be a part of our lives and forever in our hearts. Please send your entries to Shawn Henning http://www.myspace.com/shawnhenning or email mjbook2@yahoo.comalso please join http://groups.myspace.com/ourvoicewillbeheard together we can make a change please tell a friend
