I think my family was my first influence. I am the youngest of six kids, all of them pretty "dented" as my brother Scott says. We all had to be funny to survive.

General
People and their messy life stories (they are all messy, no matter how shiney they keep their shoes). Travel, but not in a tour group with matching cowboy hats and name tags. I want to immerse myself in the culture and everyday life of other countries.
Music
Jumpin' Blues - the stuff that makes my butt move. The stuff that makes me jump up and dance despite local regulations. Torch songs that I can belt out when nobody's looking, or when I want everyone to look. Show tunes. Old-time, romantic Mexican music, like Jos.. Alfredo Jim..nez. Contemporary Mexican singers like Paquita, La del Barrio. The Green Cards.
Movies
Harold and Maude - loved it when he gave her a ring and she threw it into the water and said "Now I'll always know where it is." What the Bleep Do We Know. (I know, the storyline is goofy but I love all those scientists and the fact that we have control of our lives at the cellular level.) Reds - I like the format and how the story is told. Antonia's Line - I want that farmhouse. I want to feed food, wine and laughter to my strange and amazing friends at a table in the center of the barnyard. Documentary: The Tunnel - The Real Story. Good Night, And Good Luck - my favorite line: Let us not confuse dissent with disloyalty.
Television
The Daily Show and Colbert Report (only news worth watching). Simpsons. South Park. Jackass. And yes, I must admit, CSI Las Vegas. It's not the gore (I close my eyes). It's the science and the solving of mysteries...and something about that bow-legged Gil Grissom turns me on.
