New CD OVERSEASON recorded by Ondrej Pivec in New York is out
Ondrej Pivec is coming with a new album Overseason realized in New York, where Ondrej and his Organic Quartet colleague - drummer Tomáš Hobzek – came for a short stay to gain some experience in summer 2007. Pivec and Hobzek arrived to New York with the only aim to learn new things from their famous colleagues, arrange new contacts, play music and be a part of the jazz cosmopolis for a while. The fact that they..ve actually returned with a brand new album released was just a very lucky coincidance combination of that moment – the guitarist Jake Langley ( www.jakelangley.com ), the regular accompanyist of one of the todays most famous Hammond organists Joey de Francesco, offered his cooperation after he listened to the album Never Enough . Then Ondrej..s short performance with guitarist Peter Bernstein opened the door to the Long Island recording studio. And the last but not least the company was joined by the saxophonist Joel Frahm ( www.joelfrahm.com ) who has recorded with some of the top musicians like Brad Mehldau, Kurt Rosenwinkel or Lee Konitz.
New ORGANIC QUARTET CD is out! "NEVER ENOUGH"
was released in early May 2007. The CD contains 7 brand-new tunes written by the band members (Pivec, --moldas, Dole--al) and one well-known jazz standard Lil' Darlin' by Neal Hefti. The band's sound was intensified in two pieces by a guest horn section featuring Miroslav Hlocal on trumpet and Lubo-- Soukup on the sax. The last two compositions - Lil' Darlin' and Don't Get Any Ideas (with the lyrics written by Jonathan Ramirez Garcia) - brooch a new domain for the up-til-now exclusively instrumental group, as Pivec sings on them.
The CD is released by the independent label Animal Music, owned by Petr Ostrouchov, an ex-member of the ska band "Sto zvírat", soundtrack composer (--elary), lawyer and above all a huge jazz fan. The distribution for the Czech and Slovak Republics will be done by SONY BMG MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT, the media service by 2MEDIA company and in Japan the CD is being distributed by Kohshin Media.
The album will also be released in the US by the prestigious HammondBeat label for a worldwide digital distribution.
A new Czech project was launched in the spring of 2005 and it was named Ondrej Pivec ORGANIC Quartet. This exciting young group is composed by respected and already well-established musicians. Organic Quartet plays original music inspired by contemporary giants such as Kurt Rosenwinkel, Sam Yahel, Peter Bernstein, Brad Mehldau, and Wayne Shorter. The band is also influenced by great icons from other musical genres including Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Ray Charles, and The Beatles. Organic Quartet’s musicality stems from traditional roots but definitely carries a modern taste. Organic Quartet is established as one of the favorite uprising jazz bands with their energetic live shows selling out clubs across the Czech Republic and beyond (FIAP Jean Monnet Paris, Jazz Club St. Germain Paris, Kunstfabrik Schlott Berlin and more).
Most of the band members are school graduates of the Jaroslav Jezek Jazz College. The band members are: Tomas Hobzek on drums which also is a member of the city Opera Orchestra, Libor Smoldas on Guitar who recently received a grant to study at Berklee College of Music in Boston and also often plays in his own band Libor Smoldas TrioKuba Dolezal on Saxophone; a popular instrumentalist also touring with the European jazz youth orchestra. And finally the heart of Organic Quartet led by Ondrej Pivec on Hammond, the 24 year old charismatic and promising talent who in his young age has caught the attention of National and International critics. In 2005 Pivec was named “Best soloist of the year” by the Phillips International Jazz Festival committee. The following year after recording their first album entitled Don’t Get Ideas which was hailed by critics and received Czech Music Academy award for best jazz and blues CD in 2006. Pivec was elected “Organist of the month” for October 2006 by International archives of Jazz Organists.
Pivec started off on classical piano, but soon turned to jazz. Before he was twenty he switched from piano to Hammond organ. Since then he has taken lessons from the legendary English Hammond player Mike Carr and an Italian organ virtuoso, Albert Marsico and Sam Yahel. While admiring organists such as Sam Yahel and Larry Young, Pivec has already created his own original voice. Using his left hand, he creates very strong and agile organ bass lines with unexpected sureness and virtuosity. As a leader or a sideman Ondrej Pivec has toured all over the Czech Republic as well as abroad, (SemperOper Dresden accompanying Christian Rover, Turkey as a member of the Yvonne Sanchez Brazilian Groove band supporting the drummer legend - Billy Cobbham’s Culture Mix Band, St. Germain club in Paris, Kunstfabrik in Berlin, Romanian and Moldavian tour with Organic Quartet and soon to appear on Cheltenham jazz festival). Today Ondrej Pivec is respected as one of the most remarkable musician on the Czech jazz and fusion scene. Despite his young age, he himself has taken part in creation of 10 CDs (7 as a sideman, 3 as a leader).
