What do you get when you put four hyperactive young men in a band house for four years in the middle of the cold, isolated prairies, feeding them Zeppelin, Soundgarden, rare meat and Thin Lizzy? Maybe something like Saskatoon's One Bad Son, who are about to take over the space between your ears.
One Bad Son is an anomaly in today’s music industry. At a time when mainstream hard rock has become stale and predictable – and viewed as passé in most indie rock circles – One Bad Son has defied the norm, finding success in a niche of hard rock that is as fresh and intelligent as it is loud.
After four years of determined writing, recording and touring, the band was ‘discovered’ by Default drummer Danny Craig after an opening slot for the band, and next thing they knew they were on tour with the Vancouver rockers and recording a demo with Craig. The demo landed in the hands of New Yorker Lenny Johnson, who discovered Default, and the momentum has been building ever since.
In the past 6 months, the band has recorded a 3 song shopping demo with Craig, their single ‘Rustbucket’ has been added in moderate to heavy rotation in 8 stations in the West and on Montreal’s TheRockandRollReport.com, the band was voted ‘Artist of the Year’ in Saskatchewan, and they have toured the West extensively, culminating in a double showcase @ NXNE in Toronto.
The result of all this is that they are currently in management negotiations with Union Entertainment Group, and are getting ready to finish recording an album that promises to shake up the Canadian rock and roll scene as we know it.
Their over the top live show has drawn comparisons to energy-heavy bands like the Who, Zeppelin, and early AC/DC. It has also resulted in the band winning a province-wide competition to open for Boston rockers Godsmack in front of 3000, which further led to an opening set in front of 5000 for L.A.’s Buckcherry.
Also under the band’s collective belt:
• Won $10,000 grant from local radio station to help fund 2nd album
• Signed to (and released 2 albums under) New York/Nashville indie label Versailles Records
• Have released 4 singles (‘Alive in Texas’, ‘Crooked Mic Stand’, ‘Sun/Fire’, and 'Rustbucket'); all have been picked up by rock and college stations across Canada, receiving low to moderate rotation from Winnipeg westward, with heavy rotation in Saskatoon & Regina
• ‘Sun/Fire’ achieved ‘Gold Status’ on MaxTrax/Galaxie digital radio programs nation-wide
• ‘Sun/Fire’ was most requested & most played song by a local band on Rock 102 FM in Saskatoon ('08)
• Band has seen a tenfold increase in iTunes sales of last album vis-à-vis first album, as a result of an increased net presence on sites like YouTube, Facebook, Myspace, and CD Baby.
The band’s online following on Facebook, Myspace, Twitter and YouTube is growing exponentially with each face melting live show, and it is only a matter of time before the cat is let out of the bag on the West’s best kept Rock and Roll – with a capital ‘R’ – secret.
One Bad Son is a band that is building a perfect storm of radio, live prowess, song writing, and unrelenting hard work, and things are about to be let loose. Hope to see you in the front row when that happens.
