One Dollar Hat (ODH) plays old time stringband music. They started playing together in 2001. One of the fiddlers is a fella named Zach Smolko. He is one hell of a musician. He plays in several bands (Helper T Cells, Colonel Steve and the King-Size Break- Dancing Embryos, The Abductees, The Pete McDonald Band and also he often joins the first Sat. Contra Dance Band). He is a fiddler, guitarist, cellist, accordian player, mandolinner, drummer, banjo player, a saw sawyer, a trumpeter (what doesn't he play?) and a song writer/singer. He is an all around fun-gi. Gordon B. another one of the fiddlers always wears a one dollar hat and anything that is free. He has been playing music since he was little but picked up the fiddle around 1980. He also plays a variety of instros: banjo, guitar, piano and mandolin. He writes songs and tunes as well as sings. Louise never, ever wears a one dollar hat. She sings mostly and is working on her guitar skills. She actually writes songs while she sleeps but never remembers enough of the song when she wakes up to really say she writes. Recently ODH has been doing a lot of music with a banjo pickin lady, Rachel McKinney. She sings harmony and plucks some merry banjo tunes. She can go either way with eggs in a pan or bread in a can. Often the band performs with two brothers from the McDonald clan - brothers Pete and Nate. They bring guitars, banjos, fiddles, mandolins and a big old bass to the ODH sets. Both brothers are fine songsters. They write and sing some incredible, soulful songs and perform in tight harmony. Hope to see some of you myspacers at one of the One Dollar Hat performances
