Just Matt, and occasionally the voices in his head that sometimes tell him to play a sixth over a minor seventh. Thankfully, said voices only come out when the moon is full, or when he has to play The Orange Blossom Special.
Influences
Matt is influenced by any album or artist that he can get his hands on. One day it could be Vassar Clements, the next it could be Jimi Hendrix. Matt tries to find inspiration in every type of music, and believes that musical discrimination is comparable to being stupid, and that both should be outlawed.
Sounds Like
William Shatner singing Elton John's "Rocket Man"--i.e. the very essence of cool.
Charming audiences everywhere and exhibiting a maturity way beyond his years, Matt, at only 18 years of age, has a diverse musical background. He started playing with his first bluegrass band at age 12 and at 14, recorded "Timeless", an instrumental CD he's honored to share with Marcille Wallis and Paul Cottrell.
Matt's musical training started with classical piano lessons when he was six years old. He started Suzuki violin lessons at eight years of age, but is now exploring his interest in the roots music of America while continuing to learn and develop his own musical style.
During his classical training, he developed a love for fiddle music of all kinds, particularly old time, Celtic and bluegrass. Four years of attendance at Mark O'Connor's Fiddle Camp in Dickson, Tennessee, where he studied with and was inspired by legendary fiddlers, furthered his passion for fiddling. Matt's love of all kinds of music, coupled with his broad understanding of musical theory and exceptional command of his instrument enables him to play many types of music, including bluegrass, rock, Celtic, country, swing, classical, and jazz. He earns the respect of all who play with him, yet he remains humble and seeks to learn all he can from each musical experience he has.
Matt has an impressive list of fiddle wins under his belt, most notably, the titles of 2004 Florida State Youth Fiddle Champion and 2008 Florida State Bluegrass Fiddle Champion.
Mindful of the needs of others, he shares his talents in community service for churches, fund raisers, service organizations, and as a musical member of the Walton County folk life production, "Grit and Grace".
Matt is a member of many bands, including Marcille Wallis and Friends, The Grasscutters, and Newfangled Theory. Matt is also known to be musically promiscuous, playing with just about anyone who will let him join them.
