About me: I am Deb otherwise known as Luckiangel! Welcome to my Low Carb Journey. I hope you will become one of my low carb friends!!!!
I began my low carb journey back in October 2003. I wanted to lose weight and friends and family alike told me to try the Atkins Diet. Although I had resisted for some time I decided to give it a try. Up to that point I had tried Weight Watchers, SlimFast, diet pills, cabbage soup, etc, etc....while I had some small success's I always gained it back. Gaining weight seemed to be very easy. I gained 40 lbs with my first pregancy and 50 with my second. During the 90's I was able to get back down to 180 where I hovered for several years. I was divorced in 1997 and I began to pack on the pounds during this time. I was depressed, my self-esteem was non existent, my ex had our kids and I couldn't seem to overcome the obstacles he threw at me....so I ate. I found my comfort in my favorites; chocolate cake, brownies, pasta, candy, chinese, pizza; anything that would cut out the pain. I ballooned to a whopping 225lbs.
I finally realized I needed a life. So I decided to move to Arizona and start a new one. Although moving helped to improve my perspective and my will to survive. Life seemed to be full of new experiences and I looked forward to making the most of it all. It was 4 months after moving that I had my first surgery. My gallbladder was removed and it was found that I also had a problem with my ovaries and I ended up losing one of them as well. During the next year those problems multiplied and in 2002 I ended up having a hysterectomy due to a condition called endometrial hyperplasia. Thankfully only 1% of the kind I had turned to cancer but it was enough of a scare! Because of the hormones needed during this time before the surgery I put on another 40 lbs. After my surgery recovery took a while or so it seemed. More hormone therapy, depression, mood swings....need I say more. Life trudged ahead. I bought my first home and settled in and after a year I decided it was time to try ATkins. I managed to lose 23lbs by December 2003. I bounced around between 240 and 250 for the next three years however. I still don't know why I couldn't move past 240 but I seemed to be holding there during 2006. In November I got a virus and it just didn't seem to want to let go. It lingered until March when my doctor put me on a round of prednisone to keep my asthma under control. By this time I had gained back all but 12 of the original 23lbs and swelled to 265lbs. This was my heaviest. I could not believe that I was this heavy. I was on the edge of diabetes. I had high blood pressure, swelling in my ankles, a recurrance of candida albicans (yeast) and my feet began to hurt. I KNEW I could not continue. I began using caprylic acid to take care of the candida and noticed a small weight loss. It was at this time that I decided to renew my commitment to ATkins and hopped on board!! My renewed journey began March 26, 2007.
It is now July 21, 2007 and I now weigh 225lbs for a total loss of 40lbs. I have also lost 15 inches.
I will keep track of my journey here, so please come back and see how I am doing! It hasn't all been a piece of cake (sorry for the pun!!), it's been a struggle with cravings and cheats, and insensitive people with well meaning intentions. Check out my blogs from here on in to see how I am doing and to encourage me forward. My ultimate goal is to lose total of 115lbs. My next mini goal is to lose a total of 50lbs by the end of this month. (Only 10 more to go!!!)
If you read this whole passage you are definitely one of my heroes! THANK YOU for walking this far with me! I invite you to become one of my friends and share your adventures and stories with me as well!!!
