  • Masa’s Movie Review: Persepolis

    Current mood:bouncy

Persepolis, 1hr 35mins, French Animation, Dir. Marjane Satrapi, Vincent Paronnaud

    Hello Kiddies!

I hope y'all are warm and happy. All is well with me. I've joined a gym and have started to work out in the wee mornings. I'm enjoying it. I realized I wanted pecks. Aren't pecks in? The new butt?

Anywho, Persepolis! I love, love, love this film. Visually it's beautiful and the story will crush your heart. Marjane, a rebellious, Iranian girl tries to survive in a ever changing Iran (during the 80's). As she escapes to France, she examines who she really is, what she's really rebelling against and ultimately, her lost roots. Did I mention it's crushing? For me the most crushing part, is it seems like many people have gone through a similar experience.

But the film is soooo good, that it's also uplifting. We didn't walk out of the theatre wanting to jump off the Bat bridge, rather giddy that we just watched a smart, poetic film.

Back to the beautiful animation. It's nominated for Best Animation Film at the Oscars. Against Rat-at-at-touiee, which I really didn't like (yes, that's right!). Strangely both take place in France. Interesting. I don't think Persepolis will win, but it should. Every frame is pure art. I was drooling it was sooo beautiful. Drooling!

Okay kiddies, I give this film an animated 4.5 out of 5 Rosies!!! Austinites, it's currently playing at the Dobie, go see it!

  • Masa’s Top Ten films of 2007!!!

    Current mood:breezy

    Hello Kiddies!

I hope y'all are having a warm winter! I'm still not completely acclimated to the Austin weather, hence wearing my parka when it's 70 degrees today. Oh well.

When I must say 2007 was a pretty great year for films. And it's strange cuz my favorites are actually being recognized and getting awards. That never happens.

Runners up: Hostel II, Sicko & Rescue Dawn

    10. The Great Happiness Space: Tale of the Osaka Love Thief (Japanese)
    - An eye opening documentary about male escorts in Japan. It's suppose to be funny, but it's oh-so tragic. The last scene is great; all the male escorts wake up from their morning coma's and stumble out of the club together. Half dead, they walk into the sunrise.

    9. Simpsons, The
    - I'm a nerd! And a sucker for any Simpsons... hence my Simpsons chess game, Simpsons christmas ornaments, Simpsons mugs.... but it helps that it's a funny film. Best new character: Boob lady and her sexy breathing rituals.

    8. Southland Tales
    - Is this film a complete mess or the most original and fascinating post-Apocalyptic film of the last few years? I dunno.... but it sure stays in your head. And I will give kudos to any film that casts Cheri Oteri, Sean William Scott, The Rock and Justin Timberlake in serious roles. And they're all great here. Did I just give Sean Williams Scott kudos? Sweet lord...

    7. Golden Compass, The
    - Um, what happened with this film!? It's amazing, heart warming, smart eye candy. It did pretty bad in the US and I'm still shocked. Personally, I never got Lord of the Rings(well, alittle. I am a nerd) or Harry Potter and the Sorcerer of of never ending sequels. Golden Compass outshines them all. And really, I'd rather have a cat as a friend than an owl. Owl's are b-o-r-i-n-g!

    6. Superbad
    - Could be the yummiest gay film since Y Tu Mama Tambien. Gayer than Clay Aiken. Even gayer than Ross from Celebrity Fit Club. It's Porky's, but with heart. Definitely the funniest film of the year!

    5. No Country for Old Menz
    - Of course. This is a no brainer. Amazing cast, perfect direction and characters that will live on forever.  I know it's winning all the awards and most likely will win best picture at the Oscars(if there's going to be an Oscars!) and I'm fine with that. Good stuff.

    4. Tailor Made (Chinese/Canadian)
    - Okay here's a film probably 99.7% of you haven't heard. It's a Canadian documentary that chronicles the final year of a tailor shop run by 3 elderly Chinese men. They are locally famous and have clients like Sean Connery. None of their children want to continue the business, so they have to find an apprentice or close the shop. I smell a reality show! If only! It's funny and tragic. I cried a lot during the screening. And I never cry. My partner thinks I'm empty inside.

    3. Diving Bell and the Butterfly
    - Speaking of crying... yeah, this is a tear-jerker too. And a must see. Any film about someone, who writes a novel with just one eye is going to inspire you. I ran out of the theatre thanking God for all my limbs. I was contemplating writing a novel myself, but there was a marathon of America's Next Top Model.... so it goes.

    2. Juno
    - Anyone who knows me knows I love Ellen Page. She can't do wrong in my book. And a film with her, Jason Bateman, Alison Janing and supercool Michael Cera can't go wrong. Especially with a soundtrack by the Moldy Peaches. Best movie in the theatres currently.

    1. Once

Yes, the sweet Irish musical gets my numbero Uno spot. And not only is it the number 1 spot this year, but has moved into Masa's top ten films of all time list. It's never forced, there are no ridiculous suprises in the 3rd act and it's one of the most honest film about love and relationships. Not every love story has a happy-ever-after ending, but can end happily. And not even love. This film's more about lonliness and finding comfort in another person. It's not as dramatic as love, but still is an experience we all hope for.

Okay that's it! One side note, I still haven't seen all the 2007 films. There will be blood and I don't want to sleep alone are still on my radar. And could break in. Also I haven't seen Alvin and the Chipmunks....

Happy New Year!!! 2008 will be an amazing year for everyone!!!

  • Masa’s Movie Review: Superbad & The Invasion!!!

    Current mood:exanimate

    Hello my peeps,

And how are you doing? All is well with me. Last weekend, my hubby and I went on a road trip to Memphis. Since it was the 30th anniversary of Elvis's death, it was packed with super nutty fanatics and Elvis impersonators. Elvis impersonators are kinda scary up close. Trust me. Like clowns. All in all, a great weekend! So in the last few days, I found the free time to watch 2 new films. Superbad (hahaha!) and the Invasion (aaaaahhhh!). But did Masa likey? Let's find out!

Superbad Movie Stills: Michael Cera, Jonah Hill, Seth Rogen, Greg Mottola

Superbad, dir: Jonah Hill, 1 hr 54 min, Coming of age Comedy

This movie had a lot going AGAINST it for me. When I first saw the trailer about 4 months ago, I was excited about it. But since then, the trailers have been all over the place. If I saw that "I am McLovin" clip one more time, I would have shot myself. Well maybe shoot the tv. So, going into the theatre, I pretty much knew what was going to happen. But about 10 minutes into this film, I realized how great it is! I love Superbad! The dynamic between the two main characters is fresh, hilarious and heartwarming. One of the issue, many of the critics have with this film is that it seems 15 minutes too long. Not for Masa! The last 15 minutes are the best! I love how it's super hetero and homo at the same time. But aren't all great movies? Anyways, see it. It's worth the hype.

The Invasion Movie Stills: Nicole Kidman, Daniel Craig, Jeremy Northam, Oliver Hirschbiegel

The Invasion, Dir: Oliver Hirshbiegel, 1 hr 33 min, Horror/Suspense(I guess)

Oh Nicole... So, the invasion is about the world being taken over by emotionless aliens. And the kicker: the alien virus grows when you're sleeping. Ahhh! So poor Nicole Kidman has to save her son and the world without nap time. It's hilarious because it seems like she gets sleepy right after she finds out she can't sleep. I mean it's like 6pm and one eye is already closed. So sleepy... Oh and there's an amazing scene with her son. It pretty much goes like this:

Nicole: "Hey kid, mommy's really sleepy. And you know what happens when mommy sleeps? She dies and becomes a scary alien. So.... if you love mommy, you inject this mountain dew into my heart, so I wake up. Now hold onto this very large needle. Can you be strong for mommy?"

    Kid: "Uh...."

Nicole: "That's a good son. Remember when mommy sleep... you stab me in the heart. Really, really hard."

There are a couple of spots that were kinda creepy, but it never gathers enough momentum to keep the audience involved. Speaking of the audience, that was us and one guy right behind us. Sad. I love Nicole Kidman (that's right, I admit it), but she can't save this film. It's stinky.

Okay Superbad alien invaders, I give Superbad 4.5 out of 5 Rosies and The Invasion 2 out of 5 Rosies.

Okay there's only a week or so left in summer! What the hell are you doing on the net? Go outside and enjoy the sun! Chow,

    Masashi

  • Masa’s Movie Review: Sunshine

    Current mood:crazy

Sunshine Movie Stills: Cillian Murphy, Chris Evans, Rose Byrne, Danny Boyle

Sunshine, Dir. Danny Boyle, 1 hr 47 min, Sci-fi/Horror

    Happy Monday!

I hope you all had a fantastic weekend. I sure did! I had the great privilege of being invited to an Armadillocon party. The Armadillocon is Austin's premier Sci-fi literary convention and boy did those people know how to party! I was attacked by some sexy, Alien pole dancers and had one too many intergalactic expresso Jello shots. And to top of the weekend, I finally saw Sunshine. But did Masa like it?

First off, the plot is simple enough: the sun is dying, so earth decides to launch tons of bombs into it, which(in theory) would reactivate the sun. Oh and there's a team of humans, who are launched with the bombs. And I thought my job sucked! In the end, it's a film about death and coming to grips with it.

Okay, so I'm torn. I loved this film till a shocking revelation which occurs at the end of the second act. Now this twist both ruined the tone of the film, but also pushed it into the realm of a silly horror film. And I love silly horror films! So, I should have really like the twist, but I didn't. This film was so touching and we grew with the characters too much. So, to then watch them fall one by one to a silly twist... it was dissapointing.

Visually this film was amazing. I have to give kudos to the effects team; not one frame goes by that isn't jaw-dropping. And the cast did a pretty good job. Even Chris Evans(the annoying flamer in Fantastic Four) proved he can act. Now that's a shocking revelation!

Okay sunshiners, I give this film a 2.5 out of 5 Hot, hot, hot Rosies. Have a super week and don't stare into the sun!
