About me:
MORTEM BRAND : THE PASSING (2004)
Written by Jay W. Davis, Illustrated by Mike Jenkins
Centuries ago, a master swordsman crafted a blade that could cut through spirits as though they were solid. The blade was called MORTEM BRAND (Sword of Death). The mystical sword is so powerful, it is said to sap the life from the man who wields it. Only a skilled swordsman may pick up the Mortem Brand, as it will burn in the hand of a novice. Once a new swordsman has been accepted, he BECOMES the Mortem Brand... sharing the name of the sword.
Over time, various Mortem Brands have collected other artifacts as well. The Belt of the Fading Moon grants the wearer limited invisibility. The Hands of the Dead allow the wearer to hold on to a spirit.
It is the duty of the Mortem Brand to wander the lands in search of spirits and demons that would threaten our world. "Ethereal Sensitivity" is the power the sword grants that allows the swordsman to "feel" where trouble is. The Mortem Brand moves from town to town, place to place, eradicating trouble spots and subduing demon uprisings.
In "Mortem Brand: The Passing," we find a small countryside town in Japan under seige by a demon threat. The monster has already slain townsfolk, and has kidnapped a young woman, Hakkou. When her lover, Ichiru, returns from the fields, he must take up the sword and head to the vacant tower where she has been taken. The Mortem Brand arrives and tries to convince the younger swordsman to head home for his own good, before disappearing from sight. Ichiru cannot let Hakkou's fate rest in the hands of a stranger, and presses futher into the dark interior of the tower.

Who I'd like to meet:
Comic fans! What makes this book so appealing is twofold:
1) I've heard many, many times that this is one of the best-written stories that One Shot Productions has released. It's hard to describe what actually goes on in the book without giving away too much, but there's a pretty good head start in the "about me" section above. The story does have an interesting structure, interlacing the events of the present with 3 sections of double-page flashbacks (one such flashback is available on this page by clicking on "pics"). Also, this story has a definite ending (instead of to-be-continued), but also has a very clear path for where the characters are headed after the events of this story.
2) In two words, Mike Jenkins. Mike's fantasy style art is among the most unique in all of comics. I've heard the other artists at One Shot Productions all say how they wish they could work in Mike's style. The art of Mortem Brand is a perfect match for this dark and tragic story.
This book is great for all kinds of comic fans. If you enjoy checking out comics with different styles of art, this is a must-have for your collection. It's just a bonus that the story is good too!
