VERTEX MASKS (2006) master thief / blackmail comic
Fall 2006 release from Small Press / Independent Publisher ONE SHOT PRODUCTIONS!
In this one-shot issue, we meet Theron Phoenix. Theron grew up on the wrong side of the tracks, and made his way through life picking pockets and locks. That is, until he met Marian. Theron gave up all his wicked ways for the love of Marian. He even got a job as a locksmith, earning an honest living for the first time in his life. Everything was great, until Marian became ill. Her wealthy parents whisked her away from Theron and took her to who-knows-where to be treated.
Theron heard nothing for months, until a simple note directed him to a train station. It was here that he was told about Marian. She didn’t make it. But Marian’s final wish was that Theron was given something to always remember her by... their daughter, Allison. With another mouth to feed an no Marian to keep him on the straight and narrow, it was only a matter of time before the temptation of easy money got the better of Theron. An old adversary named Harbinger came into the picture. Theron had stolen from Harbinger plenty of times in the past and became his target once more. But something was different this time. Harbinger expected Theron. She was ready to have her guards beat the life out of Theron until his pleas for mercy led him to tell Harbinger about Allison. Harbinger, having lost a child of her own, felt pity - not for Theron, but for his daughter. An idea ran across Harbinger’s cruel mind. She decided to spare Theron’s life on two conditions. First, he must become her personal errand boy, stealing whatever paintings, sculptures, gems or relics she desired. And second, Allison was to stay on Harbinger’s estate grounds at all times - an insurance policy of sorts to keep Theron on a leash. Theron had no choice but to agree. Harbinger’s assistant, Gretchen, was sent to fetch Allison, and the little girl hasn’t stepped outside her beautiful prison a day since.
This sets the stage for VERTEX : MASKS. Theron is on one such errand for Harbinger, and things don’t go smoothly. Not only does he run into AGENT RAVEN (the fed who’s been on Theron’s tail for months), but he also bumps into another major One Shot Productions character (who exactly is a surprise).
