Meet your new best friend, OneStarCity. Don’t let the fact that the band has only been on the scene since early 2008 trick you into labelling them amateurs. Each member of the Vancouver rock band comes with rich and varied experience both musically and geographically, making OneStarCity anything but a typical Indie Band. Josh hails form the Yukon, Greg from the Northwest Territories, Tom from the UK, and Phil from the interior of British Columbia. Together, they combine to form a sound that is difficult to pinpoint; perhaps it’s best described as a ninja fighting a unicorn.
Besides fictitious animals and illusionary warriors, OneStarCity finds inspiration in what they see and feel, and the group’s lyrics are born from a reflection of actual events, which are not overdramatized or perpetually negative. Their sound can be described as aggressive, yet still graceful and introspective, all of which harkens back to the individual influence of each band member, especially since three of the four members are song writers. Perhaps that is why OneStarCity has the ability to reach so many audiences; their fans are not relating just to one story.
Although the band is serious about their music, they still have fun and tend not to take themselves too seriously (as their friends and fans will tell you, they are real jokesters). OneStarCity’s live performances are filled with an addictive, electric energy and crowds that enthusiastically roll with the flow of switches from driving tunes that one can swing an axe to, to more laid back songs that are appropriate for yachting. These live performances, coupled with the success of their debut full length album, Lion Fights in the Streets of Hollywood, have helped them accomplish much more than could be expected in the first year, including a spot on the Vans Warped Tour, a clothing sponsorship, and a song on the soundtrack of an upcoming Suicide Girls DVD.
OneStarCity aims to take the listener out of the moment and into their world for just a stitch in time. And their world is one that is diverse, full of talent, fun, and most of all, real.
