mr french and i came together a few years ago with intentions to
bring an
easy, sexy groove to the weekly party set. the "chocolate city" radio
audience provided a foundation for the tone of the evening - i've
been on
the air for 10 years and the number one compliment i get is people
saying
they "get it on" during the show. so the musical vibration of the
night is
based on an intelligent, sensual framework where we play a wide array
of
genres - from familiar joints and classics in hip hop, r&b, soul,
funk,
reggae, dancehall, and house, to the most unique of world rhythms -
afrobeat, samba, bhangra, as long as it keeps the ladies happy and
the
dancefloor lubricated. the rep of the night is just so - people come
to
enjoy themselves on the dancefloor, sweat their cares and stresses
away
for
a few hours as it should be for any worthwhile party.
we've never really promoted the night, cus the weekly attandance has
been
so
steady - we figured we'd promote when and if necessary. in 2006 we're
continuing in our mission to remedy the plague of musical mediocrity
by
throwing some live performances into the mix.
we're thankful to be at zanzibar cus the soundsystem is descent, the
security and staff treat people well, the location is in the cut, and
the
parking is easy and free. just about all their nights are highly
recommended, but sundays are the best*

The Sun, the hearth of affection and life, Pours molten love on the delighted earth, And when you sleep in the valley, you can feel How the earth, nubile and ripe with blood; How its huge breast, rising with the soul within, Is, like God, made of love, and, like woman, of flesh, Heavy with sap and sunlight, And embryonic swarms!

"One of the few clubs that really feels like a house party, this club night houses an arty, laid-back crowd that's as multi-flavored and -hued as the rhythms on the decks. Chocolate Bar has been going strong since 1997, and that's largely due to its hosts Shakespeare and Aurelito, two eastsiders with a lot of friends. Over the years their posse has grown with the help of their I&I Sound System—a converted ice-cream truck pumping out reggae jams—that they take to events around town. Still, Chocolate Bar remains the pair's homebase, an unpretentious hang where peeps of every color get to know each other on the dance floor while vintage wax experts Daz, T. Lee and Higher spin everything from Bob Marley to A Tribe Called Quest to Stevie Wonder. Occasionally, there are even live visual art performances. As for the crowd? Some work the ethnic look with dreads and multicolored threads, others look like '70s soul bros and sistas—but most stay casual in jeans and tees." — Lina Lecaro
Just an early note to all the Chocolate Bar familia, supporters and new friends! The Chocolate Bar will be moving to the hottest new night club in the eastside called Ex-Plx. This night will be held every Fridays from 9pm - 3am featuring the original Chocolate Bar deejays alongside very special guests performers + deejays. There will be no dress code because do remember that "You can buy fashion but you can't buy style!" is the Eastside's motto. The club of course will be 21+ over and there is a $10 cover and the price will only change according to big performances and concerts during this event. We will be taking limited rsvp's only from myspace friends for the grand opening of the new hotspot where the looooong running Chocolate Bar will be making it's new home. And a note to all Chocolate Bar Familia that has been supporting for the past 10 years; make sure to spread the LOVE to all your friends and you will be gladly rewarded with many great things to come for 2007! Plus there will be bulletins to soon come with fliers and more lovely sweet information for the chocoholic in you. Peace + Blessings to all. And do remember to spread the sweetness to the City Of Angels and beyond!!!
Hey Garth...
You're the only person I know of tha plays a FULL LENGTH Fela Kuti joint on the air...thanks for the selections! L.A. is in the house and outside in the yard!
Thanks for August and the guest list. Hey I'll be in town again... surprise. Yeah I didn't think I'd be back for two, but the company is having a trip in November. I'll buy you that bailey's and cream when I get in.
Yes, it does have loads of spam, shameless self promo, groupies, fake profiles, major label PR profiles, and even Paris Hilton. But in the month since I put up my profile, I have discovered many artists I might never otherwise have come across.
I view it primarily as a listening station and continue to be truly amazed at and impressed with the wealth of talent out there. I have been blessed with an eclectic taste in music, one that takes me all over the map, to different categories. Thus, I probably have one of the most diverse groups of MySpace friends - fellow songwriters/artists doing their thing, no matter what their "genre" may be. Please everybody: open your mind - take a listen to something you might not usually be interested in. You might be surprised, excited, maybe even be inspired.
To quote ABBA (hey, who's cooler than ABBA, huh?): Thank U for the music to all of my fellow music makers on MySpace - keep up the good work, because if there's anything that might save this crazy (but beautiful) world, it's music. And love of course.
One Way is the perfect way to spend Sundays.
Made it up from Diego for my second visit.
Nice to meet u Garth, keep doin it!
I will be back again soon.
