One World Festival took place also in Belarus

On the same day as the One World festival opened in Prague, the Belarus edition was launched in Hrodna, Western Belarus. The festival was officially opened by the Czech Chargé d'Affaires in Belarus, Vladimír Ruml.

Screenings began with the film Cuba libre depicting the Cuban dictatorship. For the Belarusian festival, films were screened in one of the last public places available in Belarus where people can still gather periodically at events with a clearly pro-democratic tone. There was great public interest shown and the room was filled to capacity with more than eighty viewers.

2008 Program Categories

A word from the festival’s founder Igor Blazevic:

"... this is a year in which the 60th anniversary of the adoption of the UN’s Universal Declaration of Human Rights will be celebrated. The Olympic Games will also be held in China and the Czech Republic will be preparing intensively for its presidency of the EU, which will be preceded by the French presidency. All of this will be reflected in the One World programme for 2008."

• Dictatorships in the Spotlight

... 2008 is the 60th anniversary of the Declaration of Human Rights. Nevertheless, a number of countries are still ruled by dictators.

While some are occasionally covered by mainstream media (Cuba, Belarus, North Korea, Sudan, Burma) other dictator’s rule in oblivion
(e. g. Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan)

• Contemporary French Documentary
... 9 outstanding French films. The selection was supported by the Paris-based festival Cinéma du Réel, which will in turn present a showcase of documentaries from the Czech Republic
• Asian Panorama
... the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing inspired the focus on human rights in China. The section will also include films from India
• Frontline Club
... the section will feature the work of top British television reporters
• Why Democracy?
... a selection of the global project aiming to raise tough questions on democracy
• Silenced Testimonies
... films that were censored and never screened in the Czech Republic and the GDR
• Putin’s Empire
... contemporary Russia and the issues of Putin’s rule as seen by various filmmakers
• Czech documentaries
... a traditional showcase of new local filmmaking
• Films that Changed the World
... 8 documentaries that played a key role in raising consciousness, including Thin Blue Line and Bowling for Columbine

Competitions and awards:

Main Competition: films compete for the Best Film Award and the Best Director Award, presented by the main jury. The international jury is composed of outstanding filmmakers.

Right to Know: a unique competition category that includes full-length, original and high-quality documentary films drawing attention to unknown or suppressed issues relating to human rights. The 16 films compete for the Rudolf Vrba Award. The Jury members are not filmmakers, instead, they have deliberately been chosen among charismatic and brave individuals who are committed to upholding human rights.

Short Forms: covers experimental and animated human-rights-oriented films of under 35 minutes competing for the Mayor of Prague’s Best Short Film Award. In keeping with tradition, directors and programmers of prestigious international film festivals have been invited to sit on this section’s jury.

The Czech Radio Award is presented for the best use of sound or music in a festival documentary.

A special award is decided by the festival-goers: The Pilsner Urquell Audience Award.

Who I'd like to meet:

The Homo Homini Award Laureates,
the brave Burmese women Phyu Phyu Thin, Su Su Nway and Nilar Thein.

Unfortunately we cannot: they are in hiding or in prison.
