In the early '90s, nobody thought glam metal would ever be back in style.
Those clothes, the hair, the makeup, the cartoonish sex-and-cars hedonism, the inescapable power ballad -- it was all ridiculous, right?
Of course, which is precisely why it's all acceptable again.
Mickey Rourke and Marisa Tomei bonded over RATT's "Round and Round" in The Wrestler. Bret Michaels and Steven Adler are VH1 stars, and Def Leppard had a top-five album in 2008.
It's not an entirely nostalgic revival, though. Take twentysomething Cole Graham, singer and guitarist for Maryville's Gun☆Slinger.
Graham heard "Welcome to the Jungle" from Guns N' Roses Appetite for Destruction when he was 8, and -- in a reversal of the old grunge-killed-glam storyline -- he quickly lost all interest in Nirvana.
"For four minutes and thirty five seconds I felt wired to blow." he says in his online bio. "And, little did I know, thanks to that taste of hair metal, I would be set on self destruct on a one way ticket to Rock."
Graham bounced through various punk and rock bands until last summer, when he formed Gun☆Slinger with drummer Doug Jones, guitarist Marcus Ott, and bassist Hannah Scott. The quartet embraces the arpeggiated guitar solos, liquored-up swagger, and other excesses of the '80s without shame, and probably better than most tribute bands.
