Below are some photos from the film, taken during rehearsals and shooting in 2003. More on Flickr!

  • Books

I read several books before, during and after writing the script and producing the film:

"The Director's Journey: The Creative Collaboration between Directors, Writers & Actors" - by Mark W. Travis: My director of photography Mark lent me this book and it gave me a lot of guidance on being a director. Invaluable!

"Digital Filmmaking 101: An Essential Guide to Producing Low Budget Movies" - by Dale Newton, John Gaspard: I found this book at Borders when I'd just finished the script and wanted to get on with making the film. It gave helpful advice on every aspect of low-budget film-making, from casting to making a production schedule. Inside are templates and examples for budgets, release forms, etc. A practical book that helped me make my film from start to finish. I'd offer to lend it out to any interested parties, but it looks like I've already done that and never got it back - I hope he/she used it :)

"Film Directing Shot by Shot: Visualizing from Concept to Screen (Michael Wiese Productions)" - by Steven D. Katz: I was extremely ignorant about the mechanics of setting up shots and how to be conversant about the shots I wanted - very important when you're the director. I didn't read this book cover to front, but rather used it as a reference tool. I'd probably have shot a better film if I had read it all, but I'm not the most patient of people!

"'Vertigo': The Making of a Hitchcock Classic" - by Dan Auiler: I picked up a copy of this book in Shakespeare & Co on Broadway in Manhattan back in 2003. I was out there for my friend Mike's rock n roll wedding. A revealing book of an all-time classic director. Definitely worth a read.

  • Heroes

Inspiration for the film: Mexican soap operas, Almodovar films, Robert Rodriguez & the fact that he made "El Mariachi" for less than $8000 while at film school, "The Big Leibowski", Raymond Chandler, Jacobean tragedies, Alfred Hitchcock films, Richard Linklater who made films in my hometown (Austin) starting with "Slackers", Quentin Tarantino, the graf and skateboard scene in Oxford (1999/2000)/Brighton (2000 onwards)/Nottingham, hiphop & drum n bass, my work with young people, the drag queens I used to know in New York, knowing my good friends the inimitable Danny Lang and the wacky but warm-hearted Dr Parsons who taught me the ethos of DIY Brighton-style.

“Only Stopping” is a coming-of-age story with a film noir twist. 16-yr-old Dan grows up with his grandmother in Brighton and leads an idyllic life of skateboarding and dealing drugs until one day his world is turned upside down. The movie charts Dan's attempts to grow up, aided by the advice of friends and family, including a mysterious woman on the run. Love, friendship, family, murder, and the seaside.

"Only Stopping" is a no budget feature film shot in Brighton. The film was started in Summer 2003. We're looking for any film festivals to enter the film in so if you run one, please get in touch.
