Robert Johnson, Led Zeppelin, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, J.S. Bach, Bob Marley, Bob Dylan, James Brown, Joni Mitchell, Herbie Hancock, Willie Dixon, Charles Mingus, Neil Young, Muddy Waters, Ron Carter, Carlos Santana, Stevie Wonder ... not to mention all the wonderful Winnipeg musicians and bands I have played with and known over the years, including Buick 6, Artificial Joy, Volume, Home Cooked Meals, Hot Rollerz, New Meanies, Motel 75, Scott Nolan Band, Twilight Hotel, etc. etc. etc.
Sky Onosson has been a musician since the age of five, starting ..boards and then moving on to bass, guitar, saxophone, and trying his hand at pretty much anything he could put his hands on.
Sky is probably best known as a founding member of Winnipeg's the New Meanies, who have released four albums since forming around 1990, including the Virgin Records release "Three Seeds". As a member of the band, Sky has performed on the same stage as Deep Purple, The Dave Matthews Band, Alice Cooper, Paul Rodgers (of Queen and Bad Company) and many, many other acts, at venues all over North America.
As a sideman and session musician, Sky has played and recorded with Twilight Hotel, Scott Nolan, Romi Mayes, and a whole host of notable roots/folk/blues acts from Winnipeg. Sky has also been a member of such diverse acts as the rootsy Motel 75 (along with singer/songwriters Scott Nolan and Dan Frechette and guitarist Grant Siemens, of the Corb Lund Band), the punk-influenced Hot Rollerz (featuring Joanne Rodriguez of American Flamewhip and the Vagiants), and the aggressive and experimental band Volume, among others.
Currently, Sky is focusing on developing his solo work. He has released a number of solo albums over the past decade and a half, including the album Mute which was made available for free download over the internet. He has been performing for a couple of years with Kathryn Yee (bass) and Alf Catolico (drums) backing him up as the Skybirds. His most recent work is the album Odd End, which is available in streaming audio at http://reverbnation.com/skyonosson and at http://onosson.com.
