An internationally shown and published artist, writer and photographer:
Karen M. Tremmel was born and raised in the Tennessee Valley at the foot of Lookout Mountain, surrounded by dramatic scenes of nature and wildlife, juxtaposed with steel mills, dams, farming and fragments of the Civil War. In 1968, Karen relocated to Canada where she was involved with the art and writing community. She lived and worked at Rochdale, Toronto’s student-run Free University where she taught art. For over twenty years she spent her time back to nature exploring natural Canada, the Rockies, the prairies of Alberta, Vancouver Island and the Canadian Maritimes: researching, painting and writing about her intimate experiences with wildlife and the natural world. Karen has illustrated and completed writing her first novel, In Lily Shadows and has begun to write her second novel. For over eleven years she has written and illustrated a weekly nature column, Back to Nature for newspapers in Florida where she continues to paint and teach in her studio. Karen is involved in her Native American community and spends her quiet hours designing jewelry and artifacts based on earlier Native American designs.
“Roots of steel, cornfields, cotton fields, dramatic landscapes, railroads and water and an intimacy with wildlife are always with me, to humble me and continue to be the strength of my work.”
