Open Door 2008: Thursday, November 20, 2008 at the MOD Club.
It's hard to believe music could make you feel this good!
Founded in 2000 by Toronto friends Marysia Czarski and Sharon Ross, the annual 'OPEN DOOR' Festival of Music for the city's two front-line Red Door Family Shelters reflects the tradition of presenting rising stars and talent beyond the horizon in an eminently street-worthy cause and has become a "cause celebre in the city". (National Post)
The Red Door Shelter provides safe and supportive emergency housing to individuals and families in need of refuge from domestic violence and to those who find themselves without accommodation. It assists residents in their efforts to establish a stable life outside the shelter through education, counseling, community services and advocacy on their behalf.
Open Door artists for 2008
Rose Cousins - "Some voices hit you hard from first blush and this is one of them. Beautifully clear and instantly distinctive" - Exclaim Magazine
Edie Carey - "Her voice [is] a full, expressive instrument with the gentility of Suzanne Vega and the soft punch of Rickie Lee Jones..." - Performing Songwriter Magazine
The Good Lovelies - Bang-on three part harmonies and winners of “Best Folk” at Toronto’s Independent Music Awards 2007.
Lyndell Montgomery - can make a joyful noise regardless of the instrument that’s put in front of her. She has been an integral component of the Ember Swift project for twelve years and is one-fourth of the artistic team that made up the Vancouver (BC) performance troupe Taste This who wrote the multiple award-winning book entitled Boys Like Her.
Trophy - Born out of the Toronto music scene, Kirt Godwin, Derek Downham, Jeff Low, Phil Houston and Pietro Fusco conjure up powerful guitar riffs and furious drumming, tempered by soaring, chilled out vocals.
Kate Schutt - has "been called folk/jazz, monk/folk, fusion, lilith/jazz, and God knows what else....[she] truly deserves your audience." - Echo Magazine
"One of the finer female singer-songwriter sets of the year." - Philadelphia Daily News

I absolutely LOVE that you have Ember Swift on your page!!!! Thanks for the add and do you like having spoken word artists improvising at your festival, because if so, I'd love to come down and participate ... especially to help a good cause in my hometown! Keep working at what you do and keep in touch ...
