Full list of DVD extras... For any fans of Anthony, or aspiring filmmakers or actors out there, this disc is a must-have. Make your parents buy it for you for Christmas!
Musical Commentary The first in the history of DVDs! Featuring the original song, "This Is the DVD Commentary!" sung by director Dan Mirvish and the crew (with lyrics like, "Your patience will be bulging, To keep up with our self-indulging.") The rest of the commentary has live accompaniment by musical director Andrew Melton. The commentary also includes star Anthony Rapp comparing the experience of singing live on set in OPEN HOUSE with the more traditional approach in his upcoming big screen version of RENT. With a video introduction by director Dan Mirvish.
Slamdance-a-Rama® Audio. Another first-ever DVD feature! Unlike traditional audio features like Dolby or THX, Slamdance-a-Rama® Audio will put the viewer literally into the film festival audience experience. With a click of a button, viewers can enjoy the film surrounded by the cheers, applause and laughs of the actual premiere audience in Park City, Utah. With a video introduction by director Dan Mirvish that also explains why he's fallen and can't get up.
Sing-a-Long Lyrics. For audiences who want to join in on the fun of OPEN HOUSE by singing along with their favorite actors, we've provided the option of viewing all the song lyrics in the movie. Join in the fun in the privacy of your living room and it'll be like karaoke without the public humiliation and vodka shooters.
Alternate Scenes. The DVD features not only Alternate Endings to the film, but also a Deleted Scene from the Alternate Endings and see what happens when Jerry Doyle calls Sally Kellerman "Hotlips" in a hysterical Outtake from the Deleted scene to the Alternate Endings. But why just reimagine the ending, when you can have an Alternate Beginning and an Alternate Middle (featuring a Japanese rendition of "Fantabulous")?
Deleted Scene. Now see this DVD excerpt on the blog! Director Dan Mirvish took a principled stand against product placement when he cut a crucial scene in the movie that was simply overridden with nearly twenty popular brands of beer, soda and snackfood. Yes, even Spam. Hear his theories on product placement as he introduces the missing scene from the movie.
How-to-Featurettes. At close to an hour of combined length, these minidocumentaries represent a "film school in a box" for how to cast, shoot and market an independent movie in today's digital world. A unique resource for any aspiring filmmaker, or just anyone interested in the secrets behind OPEN HOUSE:
How to Win an Award®. A 14-minute documentary on how director Dan Mirvish spearheaded a historic and controversial campaign to reignite the dormant Oscar® for Best Original Musical. The featurette contains step-by-step instructions on how to shoot a movie that's eligible for this unique Oscar® category. Featuring an extended interview with "Batboy: The Musical" co-creator Brian Flemming.
How to Cast a Movie. Find out the process for assembling a large ensemble cast in a no-budget independent film that's also a musical.
How to Make a Musical. Here, viewers will learn how and why OPEN HOUSE was shot with all the actors singing live on set, with no lip-syncing, prerecording or dubbing. And rehearsal? What rehearsal?
Jumping Off a Bridge (or How to Make an Indie Film). Find out from the actors what it was like to work on the movie with indie film maverick Dan Mirvish who brought his unique Slamdance style to the set.
How NOT to Shoot a Film in 17 Days. Learn the war stories of production, from police shutdowns in two cities to actual homebuyers walking through the set of the movie thinking it was a real open house.
How to Make Fingersandwiches...and Die Young. The filmmakers served fingersandwiches at all their screenings, and in one case Sally Kellerman gets into a bizarre discussion of death with legendary politician George McGovern.
Additional features include:
KABC's "Eye on LA". The Los Angeles ABC news show followed the film from preproduction (in Mirvish's garage) to the first difficult days of shooting.
Fantabulous in One Take. Follow a unique split screen view of how Anthony Rapp sang, and director Dan Mirvish shot, the opening musical number of the film in a single, continuous take.
Trailer. Unlike a traditional theatrical trailer, the DVD contains footage from the actual fundraising party in Park City in 2003 where director Dan Mirvish and producer Stephen Israel presented an early trailer to prospective investors. Features an appearance from Chris Gore (IFC's "Ultimate Film Fanatic" host).

Hey, check out my new short film "A Message from the President of Iran"!!! If you like it, click on the link to the film to get the embed codes to spread the word! Please mention it on all your profiles, websites, forums, blogs, etc. I think you'll find that it's funny, political, timely and mercifully short at just 2 1/2 minutes. Please vote for it on Revver.com and keep an eye out for it at the upcoming Oldenburg Film Festival. Thanks and enjoy!
I'm Dan Mirvish, co-founder of the Slamdance Film Festival and the director of OPEN HOUSE, a real estate musical starring Anthony Rapp, Sally Kellerman, Jenn Leigh Green, Kellie Martin, James Duval, Jerry Doyle, Ann Magnuson, and many more. Along with the rest of the cast, Anthony is amazing in the film, and was a real joy to work with. There's lots more of him behind the scenes on the DVD, as well as over an hour of how-to featurettes - essential viewing for all indie filmmakers. The Weinstein Company/Wellspring is distributing the film now through this Amazon page, Best Buy, Barnes & Noble, Borders, or for rent through Blockbuster or on Netflix. The DVD has been a HUGE success (thanks in large part to all my MySpace friends!) and it's fast turning into what Hollywood might call "a franchise" - we just released a videogame, a soundtrack CD, we've got stage adaptations in the works, and we're looking forward to working with a cellphone company for a whole suite of OPEN HOUSE goodies. If you've seen the film and you like it, we've got a comprehensive list of 29 things you can do to help spread the word. I'm constantly updating this list (especially as MySpace friends come up with cool new ideas!), so Subscribe to My Blog for all the updates. Welcome to world of OPEN HOUSE...!
April 26 Update: The videogame is now live..and FREE! Just go to www.OpenHouseMovie.com/game and start to play right on your browser! Now, you, too can be a Sexy Swiper...just like in the movie! (all you need is Java, and you're good to go)
March 9 Update: The soundtrack for OPEN HOUSE is now available! For more info, go to www.CDBaby.com/cd/mirvish or click here:
For just $12.97 you can hear the original cast recording (yes, including Anthony Rapp!) in the exact Oscar submission CD that sparked last year's Best Original Musical controversy that literally caused the Academy to rewrite their rules!
Feb 10 Update: Hey Open House friends - sorry for the delay, but I just cut together a clip of Anthony singing in Park City and talking about what he wants on his fingersandwiches. Not sure if he's still on his booktour, but if he is, here's what he wants!
Download the Anthony clip here and put it on your profile!.
also, I just loaded the clip of Sally Kellerman and me at the Hamptons Film Festival doing our Q&A last year - Sally's fantabulous as always and during these screenings, we did indeed raise money from a local investor (Elliot Epstein!) who put his real estate sign in the film - see if you can spot it on your DVD!
Download the Sally clip here!. Also, the audio for this clip will sync up with the "How to Cast" featurette on the DVD if you want (it was supposed to have been the audio commentary for the piece, but didn't fit on the DVD). But this way, you get video, too!
These clips should be up on the podcast within a few hours, too, but please spread the word!!
"Silly, enjoyable, clever and charming...everyone should go rent OPEN HOUSE!" - Scott Foundas, KPCC's Film Week & LAWeekly
"Wonderfully and insanely fun! A not-to-be-missed indie musical about couples romping through open houses starring Anthony Rapp from 'Rent'" - DVDTalk.com
"OPEN HOUSE boasts Anthony Rapp in a major singing/acting role (he stars in this years big film production of Rent, directed by Chris Columbus). Rapp plays Barry, a real estate agent who is uniquely zany, striking the note of whimsy that makes this movie so perfectly what it is both a throwback and a flash-forward to some new kind of light-hearted cinema....witty and, at times, as zany as a Marx Brothers comedy!" - CityWeekly
"A funny, fast-paced and above all very unique film. A film filled with interesting and hilarious songs about real estate that you wont be able to get out of your head. The extras are extensive and hilarious!" - FilmThreat
"OPEN HOUSE proves to be an AWESOME hangover movie, its got everything. Set in Los Angeles, this is a hilarious, crazy movie centered in the real estate world. Its a comedy, a mystery, a MUSICAL! WTF? Thumbs up to director, Dan Mirvish." - The Improper
OK, right, you probably actually want to know who I am, especially if I asked you to be my friend. I'm one of the founders of the Slamdance Film Festival, so many people know me as the "Mad Hatter of Park City" since I like to wear hats - especially when I host Slamdance each year. But I'm also a film director, writer and producer. My first film was called OMAHA (THE MOVIE) which enjoyed a nice cult following after screening at about 35 festivals, and getting the DVD stuffed into every Pioneer DVD player sold in 2002. I've also directed music videos ( I recently did a piece for Conor Oberst's Bright Eyes, which I'll try to get up on the blog at some point), promos, and behind-the-scenes pieces for other DVDs. I recently broke my leg and shoulder in a freak remodeling accident in the house that inspired OPEN HOUSE.
You can now check out the clips on iTunes as a videopodcast. Either do a a search for "Open House" or "Dan Mirvish" or try this URL: iTunes/Video link
Also, you can download iFilm clips and easily insert into your MySpace profile, including: One of Anthony singing "Fantabulous" and one of Kellie Martin & James Duval house humping to "Do You Love This House." iFilm clips
Who I'd like to meet: (sorry, I'm new to MySpace... still figuring things out....)
But I want to especially invite RENT fans to check out Anthony Rapp in OPEN HOUSE. It's a real estate musical film that's coming out nationally on DVD on Nov. 15th. Go to the blog and you'll see the clip of Anthony talking about both OPEN HOUSE and RENT, and the different ways each movie was shot. For more info, including stills, music, other clips, Oscar info, press notes, etc. go to our regular oldschool website at OpenHouseMovie.com
Get a copy and watch it while you're waiting in line for RENT. There's tons of Anthony on the DVD extra! So remember, if you're looking for a real estate musical starring Anthony, why RENT, when you can own...OPEN HOUSE?
Heyyyy can you do me the biggest favor? It'll literally only take a sec, I'm doing a contest for my friend and I just need you to click this link. It just takes you to itunes, I promise it's not spam. THANK YOU!!! xoxo Katie
