About Open Mic Lives at the Thumb!

07.April.09

Open Mic Lives is the new name for the open mic formerly held at Wired & Unplugged Coffeehouse in Snohomish, Washington. Our new home is the Thumbnail Theater, 1211 4th Street. We still gather every Friday night. Signups are at 7:30 PM and music starts at about 8:00.

With NEW hosts Magdeline and Wyatt Parks as of February, we hope to broaden our musical horizons and reach out to all different age groups. We have recently rearranged our "gold" room, and it functions better, with a more spacious feel.

We are mostly acoustic (but not exclusively non-electric) non-alcoholic environment, open to all styles of music. We ask performers to be sensitive to children in the audience, but otherwise selections are up to the performers. The policy on how many songs you can play depends on the number of people we have signed up. It jumps between 3 songs [15 minutes] or 2 songs [10 minutes], but we have even had nights where 4 songs were appropriate.

We feel we are finally getting this thing running, so spread news via word of mouth as much as possible, because it is so important to have a safe inviting place to express yourself. Have a lovely day. :]

Here's a video that was captured of me offering my bottleneck slide
interpretation of an old blues song, Goin' T' Brownsville, on open mic
night at Old Strokers in Everett, WA. It starts out with me briefly
introducing my homemade "Nobro" resophonic guitar and explaining some
of the various recycled garage sale junk that I used in it's
construction. Enjoy!

V
This section is endearingly engendered to
Tom Thumb
You lovable little So-and-So
I hate church
But I loved his songs
I pointed at the elderly gentleman
Who sung
"Everyone needs a little mercy now!"
Ironically a stars and stripes Christian song
It's so simple and universal that everyone needs a little mercy
"We don't deserve,
But we need it."
And his songs
I pointed to that little boy
Who sung "Amazing Grace."
Rot in hell
YOU BITCH POET

VI
You didn't hear me
And I remember everything you say
Like a tape recorder
I never promised anything
If you think I've agreed
Don't you think I would do that in person?
It says Tom Thumb on the side of the building
But it says Matt Alan on this book
And I think a book means much more than a building
My poem means more than this building
Her discombobulated cover of a retarded song means more than this building
That boy's short song
Sang to me
For me to hear
And everyone else in this room
Means more than your cowboy boots
Your cigarette complexion
No, you look like a cigarette
Your face is whaddaya call it?!
OVAL!!
Your red scalp is ember
And the grey wool on top
Is that last bit of ash
Cinging-on
Evading
The flick
Means more than your closed and weak mind
More than all those awards
And that stupid fucking picture with six different versions of you
In outer space
You are as beautiful as the rest of us
Rot in hell
YOU BITCH POET
Rot in hell
I stole your wife's pen
And I'm using it to write this.

In early October I wrote one of my latest songs called, “Wall Street Bail Out Blues.” Within four days of writing it, a video crew captured me playing it on the street at Seattle’s Pike Place Market and posted their video on YouTube. That video has now reached the attention of a writer for The Wall Street Journal who is writing an article about those who have written songs about our tough economic times. His article will be published this week and I’m excited to read it.

Who knows where this might lead? Call me an optimist but I have a feeling that this could mean that a few more seconds of that elusive fifteen minutes of fame might be coming my way.

It ain’t the cover of the Rolling Stone but it’s not every day that a writer from a major worldwide news outlet seeks me out to talk to me about my songwriting. That’s a huge validation of my efforts at staying true to my vision. I must be doing something right.

Follow your dreams.
