| About Open Music Circle |
Welcome to our webpage!
The Open Music Circle is a gathering place for acoustic improv musicians, vocalists, and dancers. We have been meeting regularly since 2004. Musicians, singers and dancers of all backgrounds and traditions are invited to explore new territory, expand their skills, and deepen their performance activities.
We meet twice each month, on the second and fourth Sunday, from 8 to 10 PM, at the New York Insight Meditation Center, 28 West 27th Street, 10th Floor. The space is quiet, has wonderful acoustics, and a great floor.
The Circle is affiliated the Open Music Ensemble, which performs improvisd acoustic music for audiences (see www.myspace.com/openmusicensemble), and with Open Music Dance, which promotes collaboration between improvising musicians and dancers (see www.myspace.com/openmusicdance).
The Open Music Circle sends out an email about every two weeks announcing the next Circle and also other events of interest. If you would like to receive this flyer, or have an event you would like listed in it, please let us know by email to openmusiccircle@earthlink.net.
CIRCLE STRUCTURE
All acoustic musicians, vocalists, and dancers are welcome. We have no musical or other agenda and no director. Each gathering is an exploration and an adventure. We start in silence, someone begins, then paying attention to each other, we each play, vocalize or move as we each feel appropriate, and finally we end with silence. Dancers and musicians interact with and respond freely to each other. The structure is simple, but its takes us to a deep place. It is somewhat similiar to Authentic Movement. Now and then we may try exercises to improve our skills.
Some participants have discovered useful things about themselves or their playing, singing, or dancing at a Circle whereas others have found their experience to be similar to those in a spiritual practice. Its always a great opportunity to give your right brain free reign. Most anything can happen. We usually have fun, and occasionally something miraculous happens. If you have any questions, please email us at openmusiccircle@earthlink.net.
The image below was taken at a Circle demonstartion in 2007 at a Deep Listening retreat in Rosendale, NY.
Please email openmusiccircle@earthlink.net by the Saturday before the Circle you would like to attend to let us know your intent. If you come, please enter the building at 28 West 27th Street, but kindly wait in the lobby until 8PM at which time the elevator will take us all upstairs together.
To help pay for our use of the space a contribution in the amount of $10 is requested at the end of the evening.
