Kind words:
"Emotionally engaging!"
"Her (writer/director Alyson Shelton) filmmaking provides glimpses of a potentially sensitive observer of human foibles. Above all, she has a strong and intensely shaded perf by Rebecca Lowman as a solid anchor."
-Robert Koehler, Variety
"Eve of Understanding is the type of film that gives substance to independent filmmaking. It makes the actor want to work more. The pulse of life is in the hands of the indie filmmaker, this is why I work in them. It gives purpose to my art and therefore purpose to my life."

Nick Nolte
Actor
"This is one of those independent films where halfway through I start to wonder if Miramax, or Focus, or Fox Searchlight didn't sink millions into it. Writer/Director Alyson Shelton is fantastic. If you don't have a file on her already, start one. If you're in casting and you don't have a file on Rebecca Lowman then you need to be in another business. She has a working actor's r..sum.. a mile long, but this appears to be her first full on lead. She doesn't just carry this film she dances with it. Kudos should go out to all of the departments on this one, too, especially DP Elizabeth Santoro. She's another one to keep an eye on, as her work is invisible beautiful, but without upstaging the actors or the story. See this movie, not because you're in the business, but because you're a human being and so need and deserve to be exposed to work that is this good. Brava!"

Robert Mellette, Dances With Films
"I didn't have the courage to say hello in person today-so I'm doing it now. I saw the screening of Eve this afternoon at the Waterfront Film Festival. Wow. I was deeply moved by the story- the journey that Donna took & especially the feeling of always knowing deep inside something was "off" but never being able to place it. I too, grew up not knowing my own biology, and I found myself really reaching a new level of healing just watching the film. Thank you both for such beautiful, beautiful work. It is appreciated!"

"I just got home from an amazing weekend at the Waterfront Film Festival. On Sunday, I had the fortunate experience of seeing the second viewing of the Eve of Understanding, and was inspired and compelled to send you an email. I am a survivor of domestic violence. When I saw the description of your movie I was intrigued, and at the same time hesitant. As a survivor, I am a bit more sensitive and concerned about how the subject matter is handled. I can honestly say that I am glad I chose to view your movie. Eve of Understanding presents an honest and accurate portrayal of the experience of domestic violence, and all the complicated relationships that it impacts. It also provides a sense of hope and healing, despite all the obstacles, and that the cycle of violence can be broken. Thank you for treating this subject matter with a great deal of respect and honest perspective. I have already told some family members about it, and would love for them to be able to experience the movie. I will continue to spread the word ... and eagerly look forward to seeing it again. I wish you all great success!"

A Survivor
"Eve of Understanding is a knock-out film on many levels. It is a thought-provoking journey of self-discovery that hits close to the heart. With a compelling and talented cast, an intelligent script and superb direction, the film strikes a chord with its audience in an emotional, touching and very sensitive way. Anyone dealing with ghosts from their past MUST see this film! Old wounds can be ripped right open, as is obvious in Eve of Understanding. It's how we deal with these wounds that makes us strong. This film proves triumphant in bringing so many powerful issues to the forefront! BRAVO!"
Patrick Schweiss
Executive Director, Sedona International Film Festival & Workshop
"Rebecca Lowman's performance in Eve of Understanding was a sensational breakout performance. It came from an actor I was not yet familiar with who, I now realize, is currently gathering rave reviews for her performance also in the play, I Witness at the Mark Taper Forum. Lowman's performance in Eve of Understanding is captivating. It is heartfelt, and hits all the marks throughout the film. Lowman "is the part," and it is consistent with the passion of the filmmakers, and entire cast on the Eve of Understanding. Like Lowman's performance, which will be a great discovery for Hollywood, Eve of Understanding is a discovery film, understated, done on a shoestring, and utterly convincing throughout. Exactly what we need more of...a film that feels real."
Don Franken
Executive Director, The 9th annual The Method Fest Independent Film Festival
Congrats on the first season of Slug! A little disappointed that there was no "Lost" like cliffhanger. No four seconds of black? No Mulder and Scully kiss?! Yes, I'm a TV geek. What of it?
okay... had my ensemble meeting tonight. everyone thought i made the right choices for the casting. thought the script was really good. especially the ending. they are all jazz up with this production. i can't believe my little movie going to be made. wanted to direct this since 2004 but went through rewrites and ran into the wrong people. i think this is going to be a very special movie. sweet, touching, moving, and beautiful. and i do want to look very beautiful, too. the cast couldn't be more perfect. i think if you read my script and met those actors... your mouth would hit the floor. i'm a little nervous though because june 10 is the big day for three days of shooting. i love being nervous because i know i'll make a stronger film. but it's the places. san bruno, novato, san mateo. going all over the place in the bay area. just to make it look like one location! lol. will pay off. (:
hey guys... got a great email from one of my cast mates for our upcoming short! "Hello Sage!
Yes, I did receive your e-mail, and I will be there on the 16th @7:30sm
ready to go! I've re-read the script and it brings a tear to my eye again.
This is a very touching story. I love it! Thanks again for including me it
this special project, I will do my very best!
sincerly,
Eva Bleu"
well... saw two good movies that you should check out from the mock of hollywood... "without her" and "waitress". really good movies. i'm sure they'll get some good buzz at globes and oscars. but, i feel that "without her" is a much stronger and risker film than "waitress". don't get me wrong. i loved both movies but "without her" really had a strong performance!
hey guys, dwf sent me info about a two minute film contest. so i thought of you right away. i just wrote a tiny script and i think you would be perfect for to direct, produce. anyway, if you're interested i'm more than happy to send it to you. hope you're well.
hope you're doing well. about me... planning a short family drama. the responses from actors who want to audition have been fantastic! need to find a date for auditions. shot and edited a wedding video and more clients to consider. i have to shoot an indie rock performance for hundred days this week. i also went to the san francisco international film festival yesterday to support my friend sylvia's short dorme. it was a great collection of shorts but how the bleep did a dreamworks studio short film got considered as part of the indie shorts? part of politics i guess...
eww! episode 3 is creepy! lol. one thing is for certain each episode is unpredictable. congrats on winning your award at AFI. wish i was there to see you winning your gold and glory. but i was there in spirit for sure. just a couple more weeks till my production is back on track again.
episode two is just too goofy, man. it has a sweet goofy look on life and riders. the casting looks like a bunch of slugs that you find anywhere on the street. scary. and it's so true about looking for "labors." continue to rock!
Hope this Springs finds you all well, Open Plan Films... Be sure to check out the latest piece in the Fireside Production Portfolio. It's a video we produced on a pair of solar research scientists who earned a prestigious international award for a discovery that takes their work deep into outer space. It could lead to big changes in solar energy here on Earth!
you know the old saying life is like a movie? well, my weekend was exactly like that (more like a comedy). i helped out with this italian director who wanted to make a short movie in san francisco. we got lost at the airport after picking up the dp trying to find the director's car. had a good old italian dinner at a restaurant. watched costume fiting for an early 1920s feel. then on the next day for production we spent from 11 am to 1:30 non stop filming. but the whole three days was just darn comical. and you know how italians are? passionate and dramatic people. but i love them. (:
Still reading your amazing blogs from your website. God... It's really profound deep stuff to see someone you admire and great things happen along the way from those hard challenges. I love doing good work but seeing other people successes makes me more happier.
okay. watched episode one. soundtrack was really good. i love how the harmonica really blast out. it felt character like. looking forward to seeing the rest of the series.
