Opportunity School is a Chicago indie rock quartet. Formed in 2003 by Mary Ralph and Rolando Palacios, the band released a 5-song EP under their former name, The Expatriates. They expanded into a full band in 2004 and started playing shows later that year. In 2006, they entered the studio and are on the verge of releasing a full-length record. The current lineup consists of Rolando Palacios (guitar and vocals), Mary Ralph (guitar and vocals), Janis Sayer (drums), and Gary Kupczak (bass).
Mary and Gary worked together at a coffee shop and Rolando drank a lot of coffee. Janis has a dog, and we here at Opportunity School like dogs. Taking their name from Mary's preschool, Opportunity School was born. With influences from Cat Power to The Who, Mary and Rolando share songwriting and lead vocal duties. Opportunity School reflects a broad range of musical styles, while retaining a distinctly Midwestern sound.
