Orbit Folks is a creative world jazz trio led by Belgian double bassist Martijn Vanbuel. It has Martijn on double bass, Chang Yi-Chen from Taiwan on violin and ethnic string instruments, Toshihiro Wakaike from Japan on tabla.
Orbit Folks’ three musicians each has very different background, Martijn in Jazz and western popular music, Yi-Chen in classical, contemporary music, eastern and middle eastern improvised music, Waka in classical Indian music. Nevertheless they get along well and let their music revolve in a mélange of styles and flavors, over jazz, folk, Indian music, Klezmer, middle eastern music, etc…
Their repertoire includes arrangements of traditional folk melodies, jazz compositions and originals. There is always a lot of space for improvisation. Owing to the unusual line-up of the trio, the musicians are challenged to approach their instruments freshly in a search for different sounds. So it seems that a double bass can sound like an oud, a violin can function as rhythm section, a tabla can take the role of a jazz-drummer…
