Formed in 1999 as a 4 piece in the small town of Ivybridge, Devon. Orca made only one recording and played a limited number of shows before becoming a 5 piece band with the addition of Tom Ward in late 2000. With a second guitarist and 3rd vocalist now on board the live shows took on a very energetic appearance as the music began to change from primitive Nu-Rock to intelligent Post Hardcore.
Recording in local studio 'PMC' became a frequent event and very quickly this paid off with Steve Lamacq highlighting the band in 2001 as 'Unsigned artist of the week' on BBC Radio 1. This was not to be the only time Radio 1 backed the band with other EP's being played by well known DJ's such as John Peel, Marian Hobbs, and Scott Mills. In 2004, BBC3 TV got behind the band in a program about the UK's unsigned music scene by interviewing the band and screening some live footage of Orca on stage.
Orca's most succesful CD release to date came in 2004 with 'The Days Are Restless....But The Nights Are Explosive' EP, featuring 5 new tracks. The CD was released nationally through 'Casket Records' and so was available in retail shops such as Virgin and HMV for the first time. Initial sales went well and together with the CD sales on Orca's third national tour, all 2000 initial copies had gone. The band also backed this CD release up with their first music video for the song 'Punchline' which was played on networks such as MTV, MTV2, MTV USA, Scuzz and continues to be shown today.
2005 was a year which saw the band make a brave and bold statement by anouncing that all material written over the past 6 years was to be archived and never played live again. The bands reasoning behind this was that Orca were being increasingly catagorised and labelled as something the band knew they weren't. There was a belief in the band that they could do bigger and better things, but first they wanted to take time out and write the new material that would set them on their true path.
So with the experience of 6 years behind them and exciting new material in their locker, 2006 looks to be a great year for the band. Demo's are being finished off and an album is already planned for the summer. This already energetic live band now looks forward to upcoming shows so they can get back to doing what they do best.
