"I find both of Orchid Ensemble's recordings to be of exceptional quality. The compositions are innovative and a rich delight for all of the senses", Patty-Lynne Herlevi, Cranky Crow World Music, World Music Central.
"Orchid Ensemble evidenced the creative and distinctive appeal of musical and cultural blending.." Dr. Joseph Lam, The Stearns Collection of Musical Instruments at the University of Michigan.

"the large crowd was enthralled by the exotic nature of the music and the ability of the Orchid Ensemble to transcend cultural differences to bring them a thoroughly enjoyable musical experience", Matt Steel, The Gazette, Kalamazoo, MI
"From fingers to hands to hearts - that’s the quest of Orchid Ensemble, a group of diverse virtuosic musicians brought together through their passion for this delicate and sensitive art form - music which weaves a tapestry of magical sounds of East and West. Orchid Ensemble provides an exotic form of music full of precision and beauty." Rosemary Phillips
Established in 1997, the Orchid Ensemble's current members are Lan Tung on the erhu/Chinese violin & vocal, Haiqiong Deng on the zheng/Chinese zither, and Jonathan Bernard on percussion, including the western concert marimba. With this unique instrumentation, the ensemble combines musical traditions from China and beyond, creating a distinct new sound. Its repertoire ranges from the traditional and contemporary music of China, World Music, New Music to Creative Improvisation.
Active in North America, the ensemble gives close to one hundred performances every year, including music festivals, community concerts, K-12 school presentations, and University/College residencies. US appearances include Kennedy Center for the Arts and the Smithsonian Institution, Detroit Institute of the Arts and at Bena Roya Hall for the Seattle Symphony Society. National performances included Ottawa’s Canada Day Celebrations, Harbourfront Centre, Vancouver Jazz, Folk and Children’s festivals, National Arts Gallery, National Library, Sunfest, Halifax’s JazzEast, and Montreal’s Centre Pierre Peladeau.
The Orchid Ensemble actively commissions original compositions. Its unique instrumentation provides composers a new vehicle of expression. By performing contemporary works to a Folk and World Music audience while conversely performing traditional music to a New Music audience, the ensemble consistently breaks down boundaries between musical genres.
The Orchid Ensemble’s concert productions, supported by the Canada Council, represent its commitment to premiering Canadian music and presenting innovative cross-cultural programs. Past collaborators included Uzume Taiko, Egret Ladies Choir (Taiwan), pianist/composer Ya-wen V. Wang, Iranian santur player Alan Kushan, African percussionist ManDido Morris and Jewish woodwind player Mike Braverman. Special projects included “Road to Kashgar” – a Silk Road project, “Jews in China”- exploring a thousand-years’ connection of the two cultures, and a contemporary Asian music concert celebrating Chinese New Year. These projects have pushed the musicians to expand their vocabulary and develop new musical languages.
The ensemble’s recent projects have started to cross different disciplines:
"Ghost Project" with media artists Aleksandra Dulic, media artist/multi-instrumentalist Kenneth Newby and multi-instrumentalist Sutrisno Hartana. Inspired by a shared curiosity of the after-life in different cultures, the artists celebrate Halloween with a combination of Asian esthetics and modern video technology.
"Triaspora", with Moving Dragon and media artists Kenneth Newby and Aleksandra Dulic, explores the Chinese Canadian experience, incorporating Asian traditions with contemporary expression in an exhilarating mix of style, movement and sound. The artists draw on numerous insightful interviews from different generations of Chinese Canadians, while examining the search for cultural identity and social acceptance.
“Café de Chinitas” with Al Mozaico Flamenco Dance Theatre, fuses Flamenco footwork and lyrical Chinese melodies in a dazzling production.
“Parting at Yang Kuan” with media artists Kenneth Newby and Aleksandra Dulic and poetry reading by Britannia Secondary School students, in an exploration based around the theme of poetry and music.
“Multi Media: Road to Kashgar”, with media artist Donna Szoke, Chinese calligrapher Yukman Lai and Dervish dancer Raqib Brian Burke, to explore influences on Chinese music via the Silk Road.
Through educational programs, the Orchid Ensemble fosters the understanding and interest in non-western music for the next generation of audiences, promoters, administrators and musicians. As BC’s spokesperson for the UNESCO ASPnet in Canada, the ensemble has designed programs for primary to secondary levels. At post secondary institutions, the ensemble gives a variety of lecture-demonstrations, workshops and master classes for both music and other campus departments. The ensemble combines distinct musical traditions in a contemporary framework to inspire and encourage students in their future lives and careers.
Consistent exposure through media such as CBC Radio and TV, Radio-Canada, campus radio, major and regional newspapers and Chinese media boosts the ensemble’s profile across North America. Its two CDs Heartland and 2005 JUNO nominated Road to Kashgar have received continuous airplay. The ensemble was featured on CBC TV’s “Zed TV”, CBC Radio’s “The World In Performance”, “Westcoast Performance”, “This Morning”, “Global Village” and “North by Northwest”, as well as programs on campus and community radios across Canada.
Awesome! Yeah - Amsterdam was beautiful - there was this awesome feller who took me on a bike-tour of the whole city... I recommend! Also, it was too busy when I was there, but my Dad insisted that Anne Frank's place was a "must see".
Hallo folks! Yuppers, I am a fan! I write to you from Amsterdam tonight (Wahoo!). And I..m getting in my internet fix before I hit those cobblestone alleys for another unknown length of time! Hi to Vancouver and the mountains!
We all enjoyed the music samples on your site. Thank you for including your "Ten Thousand Miles to Kai-Feng" Performance in World Music Days and your continued contribution to the program...
Upcoming Concert - Oct 3, 2009 Jewish sacred songs and Klezmer melodies meet Chinese traditional music in a contemporary framework, JUNO nominee the Orchid Ensemble's concert pays tribute to the centuries-old links between these two cultures.
The repertoire includes Moshe Denberg's composition "El Ginat Egoz," which will feature the VCC Madrigal Singers, and a unique arrangement of a traditional Chinese piece called "Hundred Birds Honouring the Pheonix," which has been transformed for soprano sax by Mike Braverman. The show will also mark the world premier of "El Adon," a Denberg composition based on a sacred Jewish melody, and "Ba Ban Variations," a new composition by the artistic director and erhu player Lan Tung. In addition, there will be some Jewish-influenced pieces from the group’s 2005 Juno-nominated CD The Road to Kashgar, which explored Chinese interaction with cultures all along the Silk Road.
Founded in 1997, The Orchid Ensemble was one of Vancouver’s earliest East-meets-West musical ensembles. It has previously recorded compositions inspired by Western classical and new music, world music and jazz. It has also participated in several groundbreaking interdisciplinary projects.
After spending the last month driving 4000 miles around the southwest, I arrived back in Los Angeles to discover that my new album 'Anitya' has been released. Its currently available on amazon, napster and emusic...or you can listen to most of streaming for free on reverbnation.com/tullymackaytisbert. If you enjoy it I for sure appreciate the support. The album is 10 songs that involve the idea of anitya in Buddhism that all things are impermanent. The album is acoustic folk rock that also integrates traditional east asian sounds and uses the chinese lute the pipa. Thank you for listening!
