The term ordeal ['ordalia' in italian], coined in the Middle Ages, derives from the ancient germanic 'ordal', which means 'God’s judgement' and states every kind of test in most cases bloody and painful, to which an accused was subjected and whose result was considered a divine response on his innocence or guilt. The accused was considered innocent if he could go through the test surviving it or without any remarkable injury, or, also, just with wounds that could meand extremely rapidly. The ordeal was considered a judicium Dei as it was based on the premise that God would help the innocent ones. Particularly famous were the ordeals of fire and of water, which involved the use the former of incandescent metal, the latter of hot water.
Nevertheless, it exist a second meaning of the term ordeal: it indicates any kind of cruel ritual which aim, in the sphere of teistic or shaman worship, consist in the purification of the soul of the fellow. This ordeal ritual targets to make the person enter in an estatic contact with his own divinity, through forms of self-punishment which incuded rituals of ascension, rotation and suspension.
Our project 'ORDALIA RITUALS' aims to recover and put on stage these painful rituals through suspension or pulling, performing the pain in a more modern way, through the use of needles and piercings. We are available to perform suspensions, pulling and bodyplay shows in clubs or for private venues. Il termine ordalia, coniato durante il medioevo, deriva dal germanico antico 'ordal', che significa 'giudizio di Dio' e indica ogni genere di prova, nella maggior parte dei casi cruenta e dolorosa, cui era sottoposto un accusato ed il cui esito era considerato un responso divino sulla sua innocenza o colpevolezza. Si giudicava innocente l’imputato che riusciva a completare la prova sopravvivendo o senza riportare lesioni significative o, ancora, con ferite con guarigioni estremamente rapide. L'ordalia era quindi considerata un judicium Dei in quanto si basava sulla premessa che Dio avrebbe aiutato l'innocente.
Particolarmente famose sono l’ordalia del fuoco e dell'acqua, che prevedevano l’utilizzo di metallo incandescente nel primo caso o di acqua bollente nel secondo.
Esiste, tuttavia, anche una seconda accezione del termine ordalia, che indica qualsiasi rituale cruento il cui fine, nell’ambito dei culti teistici e sciamanici, consista nella purificazione dell’anima dell’offerente e mira ad entrare in comunione estatica con la propria divinità, praticando forme di auto tortura che includevano rituali di ascensione, rotazione e sospensione.
Il nostro progetto ‘ORDALIA RITUALS’ vuole riprendere e portare in scena queste pratiche di dolore rituali come le sospensioni e le trazioni, reinterpretandole in una chiave più moderna che contempla anche l’uso di aghi e piercing.
