OREGON BALLET THEATRE
Oregon Ballet Theatre is rising quickly on the national scene. Established in 1989, OBT’s celebrated company of dancers performs an annual five-program season at the Portland Center for the Performing Arts and also conducts both regional and national tours.
In 2003, following a distinguished, 16-year career as a principal dancer with San Francisco Ballet, Christopher Stowell became Oregon Ballet Theatre’s second Artistic Director. His extensive training and experience, deep knowledge of the repertoire, and dedication to the discipline’s exacting classical and contemporary vocabulary are all reflected in his programming.
During his tenure, Mr. Stowell has added the work of Sir Frederick Ashton, Jerome Robbins, William Forsythe, Lar Lubovitch and Christopher Wheeldon to the OBT repertoire, and significantly expanded the company’s inventory of George Balanchine ballets. He has also commissioned new works by renowned contemporary choreographers James Kudelka, Trey McIntyre, Yuri Possokhov, Julia Adam and Nicolo Fonte. In addition, Mr. Stowell has created nine ballets on OBT’s dancers, including the company’s first full-length production of Swan Lake in 2006.
THE SCHOOL OF OREGON BALLET THEATRE
The School of Oregon Ballet Theatre is the training ground not only for OBT, but ballet companies worldwide. Named the city's Best Ballet School (Portland Monthly Magazine, 2006), our students have recently gone on to dance with OBT, American Ballet Theatre and the Julliard School.
EDUCATION & OUTREACH
OBT's commitment to the community runs deep. Our Outreach & Education programming develops knowledgeable audience members through fun, informative lectures, provides artistic outlets to at-risk youth, and presents affordable opportunities for students to experience a fully produced ballet!
OBT ORCHESTRA
For nearly 20 years, Grammy-nominated Music Director Niel DePonte has been at the helm of the OBT Orchestra. The Orchestra employs local musicians, providing opportunities for live performance and professional recording - the most recent being the OBT Orchestra's release of Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker.
Thank you Oregon Ballet Theatre for the add! I love Ballet! And you are very beautiful and you have great friends! THANK YOU for making me very happy!Have a great Month of May!
I just wanted to wish you all very well on your upcoming performance this weekend! I'm REALLY looking forward to seeing Swan Lake Saturday night! I have been looking forward to this all summer!
hi OBT! I just got onto your main page and Bolero was playing.. brought back images of the ballet (which I was lucky enough to see TWICE!) I can't wait for the next performance. It sound like it'll be GREAT!!!
Thanks for the add! Hope NUT is going well. Two former students told me they are loving it and SOBT! Congrats and am looking forward to the 4x4 Project- will be bringing students to see you!
It was fun to read this month's Pointe magazine. Kester Cotton won't remember me, but he and I were in the Nutcracker together -- way back in 1984 at the Civic Auditorium, back when it was Pacific Ballet Theater and the rehearsal space was above Melody Ballroom in SE Portland. Anyway, it's nice to see that he and his wife have had some success. (And it was nice to see a piece by Martha Ullman West. Took me back to "back in the day.")
Your opening night performance was absolutely AMAZING OBT!!!! I thoroughly enjoyed the entire performance and the only sad part was the end... because the magic was done... I didn't want to go home! I look forward to seeing you all again on the 23rd! :)

i was in nashville ballet's school admin office when i saw kathi on the cover of pointe & squealed like a little girl. i took the copy & ran to a corner to read the article without interruption ~ kudos to you all! between reading the interviews & seeing the pics, i'm now officially homesick. merde! (take that in whichever context you feel is most appropriate...) =) k~
