About me: We are a volunteer department based on the edge of the Rock River in Oregon, IL.
In April, 1876 an ordinance was passed to create the first fire fighting unit. They started with all hand operated equipment our first fire truck and pumper was believed to have been a model T ford purchased shortly before WWI. In 1922 an American LaFrance truck on roe chasis was purchased. In 1926 a GMC tanker was purchased and in 1936 a ford truck was acquired. In 1945 a new tanker was purchased from ED Etnyre Company. In 1957 a pumper truck was purchased from the volunteers' earning. The department was operated by the city of Oregon until 1976 when the Oregon Fire Protection District was created. In Nov. 1983 land was purchased at 100 W. Washington and a new fire station was built. Today this station houses 2 engine companies, 2 tanker trucks, 1 ladder company, 1 rescue rig, 1 grass/brush rig, and a rescue boat. In 1993 a sub-station was built in Chana about 5 miles from the Oregon station. Land was donated by a local family. It houses 2 grass/brush rigs. Our department is made of about 30 volunteer memebers and cover aprox. 130 square miles.
