REVIEW IN RECOIL BY RYAN CUNNINGHAM:: The tasty hi-hat and indieriffic guitar meanderings are a perfect compliment for Oridjinns' bass and hip-hop vocal grooves – imagine if Incubus had stopped at S.C.I.E.N.C.E., complete with dreadlocks intact – and the vibe is pleasantly loose even when the guitars are grinding away. The material is solid, though the mix of the recording is uneven/unfocused and could probably do better at showing off of the talents of the band. Luckily, the songs and musicianship come through well enough, bringing back a style that was sadly overshadowed by nu-metal back in the day. REVIEW IN WEST MICHIGAN NOISE! BY MUNSON HAVER:: When local bands try to peg their sound by comparing themselves to nationally-known acts, I generally disregard it. After all, I was one of the hundreds of thousands to exclaim that my pop punk band from back in the day sounded like Blink-182. Get this: turns out we didn't. But, as I glanced over some press materials on Kalamazoo's very own Oridjinns, eventually venturing out into cyberspace to give them a listen, I really couldn't put my finger on their sound. They packed a funk punch like West Michigan's more well-known acts in Funktion and AB & Coconut Brown, but they definitely brought something else to the table. Then I read it: Incubus meets Mos Def. I shook my head in agreement. I also took a bite of my sandwich, as I was eating a sandwich at the time. While it may have been just as easy to say 311, this, in a nutshell, is what Oridjinns is all about. Riding their recently released LP The Sound (May, 2010), grouping these cats in with the funk or reggae crowds would be a little ignorant but not a stretch by any means. This is a rock band with a heavy hip hop influence, making their sound rather abstract. This three-piece consisting of Gene Schmidt (guitar/vocals), Shawn Lettow (bass) and Pintoo Hoffman (drums) seem to hug the blueprints of hip hop more so than anything else. This is a positive for listeners as it is the group's strong suit, while journeying outside this element proves to be a little more a task, but one they execute in their most recent work. Oridjinns spit rhymes in most of their verses will saving the singing and rock elements for hooks and choruses. The elements of funk are blatantly obvious with the slap bass saturating the recordings, but the more subtle rock influences have to be dug for, like in the track Too Long where distorted guitar comes screaming in during the choruses.

Oridjinns is a unique three piece band hailing from Kalamazoo, Michigan. Use of their classically trained back ground mixed with a love for hip - hop, funk and the distorted guitar create their abstract sound. A sound described as Incubus meets Mos Def, fused with funk and jazz progressions.
