ORIGAMI is usually and officially: MICHAEL MANEY (bass, drums, keyboard, guitar), SARGENT HATCH (vocals, guitar, bass, keyboard) and LESTER JONES (guitar, keyboard) with: other special guest stars such as mr. jeff morava (drums).
Influences
The band was originally an Iron Maiden/Metallica cover band that evolved into a Jane's Addiction/Red Hot Chili Pepper/Love and Rocket cover band.---
Then we finally wrote our own songs. Some were good and some were not?---
Les likes Jellyfish, Genesis and Rush, but Origami sounds nothing like any of those bands. Mike likes Beach Boys, Stryper, The Smiths, and My Bloody Valentine, but we don't sound like them. Sarge likes Pearl Jam, Phish and Smashing Pumpkins, and we don't sound like those bands either. All of us like the Marillion, Pixes and Chainsaw Kittens, and we don't sound like them either.... who do we sound like?
ORIGAMI is the name of an obscure, but semi-popular Oklahoma rock band formed around 1990. The Origami's contemporaries were: Chainsaw Kittens, Nixons, Wakeland and Flaming Lips, but the Origami failed to reach the similar success, but still oddly influenced many fellow musicians. Origami did this by embracing the alternative music and culture that was yet to be noticed in middle America.
Origami comprises of Michael Maney, Lester Jones and Sargent Hatch. Many other band members came, went and returned. Most band members would go on to form other projects. Various members (michael maney, sargent hatch, les jones, ted vanderveldt, michael tanner, doug taylor, ryan andersen, ryan morton, david hobbs, luke mullenix, jeff morava) of various Origami incarnations have at one time or another been in the many following OKC, Dallas and Houston bands: uncle freddy, camp snoopy, radial spangle, lemma, ambient music cartel, judy judy judy, transmission 12, poultry yard, IOS, daddy long legs, 36 inches, bullwinckle's septic death, sapid, wax and wayne, the april society, lovelies, sun cafe lovers, lightning waltz, gleaming, asleep audience dream, far star, etc.
Origami (in various line-ups) also performed under the monikers: Apocalypse, Origami Effect, Joy, Talleywacker, Sunflower and Inherface. Currently, the core of Maney, Jones and Hatch remains.
While sometimes centering on the songwriting of multi-instrumentalist Michael Maney, other members (most notably guitarist Lester Jones and vocalist/guitarist Sargent Hatch) contributed heavily to the creative mix.
There are many early 4-track/low budget demos in the vault. Origami (as Sunflower) released an EP in 1993 and in 1994. Origami additionally recorded and released an EP Wheres Tanner? in 2000. After receiving nearly 10,000 downloads of songs on the bands mp3.com site, the band released an LP in 2001 named Architects. The band is currently on hiatus, but performing scant reunion shows with excellent drummer Jeff Morava, and may record more material in the future.
Contained on this page are several "radio edits" of some demo songs recorded 2000-2001 from either the "Where's Tanner E.P." and the "Architects L.P". ENJOY!!! Questions: origamifan@yahoo.com
