In early 2007, while driving along the countryside of the south island in New Zealand I came up with an idea to start a record label. Not your standard, put out cds and throw tons of money into the air and hope for the best kinda label, but a new and different kind of business, that would allow artists to take control of their future in the growing digital realm. A digital only label that allows artists to keep the ownership of their art and to not give up the lions share of the revenue to release it. It's not really revolutionary or the first of it's kind, but it is something that can create a lot of opportunity for an artist that wants to release their music and interact with their growing online fan base and not sign their life away in some old school record contract.
I call this pet, Origami and the business model is simple:
- All artists that are part of Origami own all of the rights to their recordings and can leave at any point to go on to bigger things.
- Origami supplies digital distribution to over 300 digital retail (iTunes, emusic, amazon, etc), mobile (Sprint, Verizon, Rogers, etc), and promotional outlets (imeem, youtube, lastfm, etc) worldwide
- Instead of taking 50% of all revenue, Origami only takes 15% of the revenue it brings in thus giving artists 85% of the net revenue!
- Film/TV/Video Game licensing are also part of the deal.

Thanks for the Mochi Love Pop Icon Michael Jackson passed away recently. It makes me think of how weird this music business really is. It is a very strange place indeed. Many have been asking for this remix. So I put it up here as a free download. Enjoy. xoxo mochi
Thanks for bringing music buying back into the visceral world. Your record store reminds me of being 12 in San Francisco and blowing my allowance on records just because I liked the covers...
