Quasar, originally formed in London in 1979, is once again emitting their unique neo-prog style which blends multifaceted lyrics with innovative melodies and contagious rhythms. Founding member Keith Turner (bass/12-string), along with PJ Shadowhawk (drums), Greg Studley (guitar), and Robert Robinson (vocals/keys) are currently in preparation for a new album and touring.
The whole history.
Quasar was formed in London in 1979 by founder member Keith Turner (Bass/12 string) and, after several trial line-ups, eventually settled, in 1981, by Cyrus Khajavi, on guitar, keyboard player Dillon Tonkin, Paul Vigrass as vocalist, and drummer David Cairns.
In 1983 they set about recording their own album. "Fire in the Sky" was released independently later that year and was well reviewed.
Paul Vigrass was replaced by Susan Robinson, (who had just left Solstice), and were quickly on the road again with a video for Cable TV being done at the Regal Theatre, Hitchin
(home of the BBC 'In Concert' and 'Sight and Sound').
Quasar did 270 gigs in the next 18 months and started to build up a good following throughout the UK.
David Cairns was replaced by Dave Wagstaffe, and guitarist, Cyrus Khajavi was replaced with Kevin Fitzgerald. Just in time they were ready to be on a compilation album, "Fire in
Harmony", released by EMI/Elusive which sold well throughout Europe.
But another upset was to come when keyboard Dillon Tonkin was replaced by ex-Tamarisk keyboards, Steve Leigh. Quasar were touring again, increasing their following and being more
adventurous with new songs being prepared for a new album.
Susan Robinson was unable to continue and a new singer was found in Tracy Hitchings. Kevin
Fitzgerald was replaced by Toshi Tsuchyia, who brought in a lot of new technology with midi-guitars and computers allowing the band to expand.
The band got their next album recorded in September '89 and 'THE LORELI' was released in Holland, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, UK and USA, and interest built up in other countries.
Quasar practically ceased for a few years and most of the members went on to form Landmarq, who have been enormously prolific with many albums to their credit.
Keith spent the time writing new material for film and TV and moved to California.
Now with new members PJ Shadowhawk on drums and Greg Studley on guitar, singer Robert Robinson and a new album in the works, things are almost back to normal.
Thanx so much for the request. I am just listening to the Fire in the Sky album. A great piece of music! I love it! All the best from Germany, Holger :-)
