In a similar fashion to the epic film "Milo and Otis", Steve (American) and Dean (Canadian) overcome their cultural barriers and congregate at least once a year to write music in a heartwarming example of the benefits of the 1989 Free Trade Agreement, and the process is really the heart of what we do.
Typically, we'll start by eating a 3-foot long chicken shawarma sandwich, perhaps playing a quick round of bocce ball, and then going to local record shops, preferably ones that have $1.00 bins, and look for the worst shit we can find (e.g., "Let's Have A Pizza Party!", by the Gaylords). Afterwards, we take them back to the "studio", listen to them, punch each other in the face, and sample them.
It's a common misconception that "sample artists" will lift entire riffs or melodies. We tend to sample single tones, chords, one-hits, drum smashes, coins dropping into imported china, the jangling of padlock keys, opening vacuum-sealed ham packages, and the tears of kittens to construct our own melodies and rhythms. But it's the process of listening to the music on record (which most of the time is terrible) that influences, and in fact enables, our compositions.
After listening to these records, we generally fucking smash them with extreme prejudice against the wall, floor and/or any mexican handmaids presently servicing us, mostly because the music is so bad that we can't stand to hear it any more. This willful act of rockstruction is invariably accompanied by a bloodcurdling Norsk battlecry, which would totally make you shit your pants.
After a typical composition session, we'll have literally dozens of records strewn about on the floor, some of them stuck in the walls, hidden in the fridge, or boiled into amorphous blobs on the stove. Sometimes the records are prepared as a salad alongside Whitesnake cassettes with a urine vinaigrette. At the conclusion of a compositional marathon, our workspace will be, perhaps like yours, littered with empty cartons of American Spirit Yellows, Pacifico Lager, bloody tablecloths, and the bleached skulls of those who dare oppose us.
