America will send a new generation of explorers to the moon aboard NASA’s reusable Orion spacecraft fleet.
Orion is a meld of the Apollo capsule and the Space Shuttle, and will carry human explorers back to the moon, and then onward to Mars and other destinations in the solar system.
Orion’s development is taking place in parallel with missions to complete the International Space Station using the space shuttle before the shuttle is retired in 2010.
The Orion CM will be larger than the Apollo CM (5.5 meters, or 16.5 feet, in diameter), with 2.5 times the internal volume, weighing about 50,000 pounds. The craft will carry 6 astronauts for Earth-orbit missions, and 4 for lunar missions.
The thermal protection system for the Orion as it reenters the Earth's atmosphere will be an ablative heat shield, similar to that used by Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo spacecraft. Boeing is the prime contractor for the heat shield.
Orion will descend by parachute to a dry land recovery site (with ocean splashdown as a backup); the landing will be softened by a rocket and airbags. Landing sites being considered at the moment are in the states of Washington and California.
Orion will differ from the Apollo SM by using solar panels, rather than fuel cells, for electric power. The Orion has liquid methane as fuel, with liquid oxygen as oxidizer.
The decsion to use liquid methane fuel for the first time, requiring new engine development work, was made because methane might be manufactured from the Martian atmosphere on future Mars landing missions.
Orion development is managed by NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston TX USA.

What's 93 million miles away and still hurts your eyes when you look at it? The answer is not the Denver International Airport, known to some travelers as DIA. But DIA does appear in dramatic silhouette in the foreground of this telephoto image. The view looks east toward the airport terminal's characteristic multi-peaked roof and the rising October Sun. The roof's appearance suggests the snow-capped peaks of the region's Rocky Mountains to the west. As winter approaches for denizens of Denver and the northern hemisphere in general, the rising Sun will continue to move south (image right) in the coming days. Of course, the Sun is 93 million miles away ...

The other side of Saturn's ring plane is now directly illuminated by the Sun. For the previous 15 years, the southern side of Saturn and its rings were directly illuminated, but since Saturn's equinox in August, the orientation has reversed. Pictured above last month, the robotic Cassini spacecraft orbiting Saturn has captured the giant planet and its majestic rings soon after equinox. Imaged from nearly behind, Saturn and its moon Tethys each show a crescent phase to Cassini that is not visible from Earth. As the rings continue to point nearly toward the Sun, only a thin shadow of Saturn's rings is visible across the center of the planet. Close inspection of Saturn's rings, however, shows superposed bright features identified as spokes that are thought to be groups of very small electrically charged ice particles. Understanding the nature and dynamics of spokes is not fully understood and remains a topic of research.

THE HOPELESS OPTIMIST,
ALWAYS I BELIEVE.
I SHOW MY VULNERABILITY,
FOR ALL OF YOU 2 C...
IT REMINDS ME OF MY HUMANITY.
A CONSTANT STATE OF GRACE
ONE IS NEVER AS HUMBLE,
AS WHEN HE ACCEPTS HIS HUMILITY.
I DO NOT WEEP THAT I WAS BORN,
NEVER AGAIN,I WON'T SURRENDER.
I FEEL A LOVERS PAIN.
AN EVER HEALING WOUND
I WEAR MY HEART ON MY SLEEVE,LITERALLY.
ALWAYS EMBRACING THE PART OF M3.
THAT CHILDLIKE NAIVETY
WITH WONDER I SEE,
TO CLUTCH THE UNIVERSE,
INTO A BALL.
OUR LITTLE BLUE PLANET.
WHERE ARE YOU?
I WATCH WITH ABATED BREATH,
SIRENS CALL.
TOWARDS THE NIGHT SKY.
I CREATE MY OWN REALITY.
THIS IS MY DREAM...
ALONE I STAND AT THE GATES.
THESE THINGS IN WHICH I BELIEVE
ARE NOT ALWAYS SEEN.
WITH THE POWERS OF IMAGINATION,
THERE IS NOTHING
I CANNOT ACHIEVE....

Why were the statues on Easter Island built? No one is sure. What is sure is that over 800 large stone statues exist there. The Easter Island statues, stand, on the average, over twice as tall as a person and have over 200 times as much mass. Few specifics are known about the history or meaning of the unusual statues, but many believe that they were created about 500 years ago in the images of local leaders of a lost civilization. Pictured above, a large stone statue appears to ponder the distant Large Magellanic Cloud before a cloudy sky that features the bright stars Canopus and Sirius.
