Sounds Like
"The perfect end to the evening was Orlando Seale, a
singer songwriter who specialises in songs about
suicide and other tragedies. The fact that his show is
highly entertaining could be a reflection on what a
sick lot we are. Then again, it could be that the
songs are superb and his backing band of piano,
trumpet, guitar, cello and violin are equally so. I
saw him last November at the Troubadour, and he did
many of the great songs again; notably “Christmas
Song”, “I Have Forgotten” “Beautiful Moron” (assisted
by Lady Anatomica!), “Devils Bath”, and “Melancholy
Shop Girl”; all dark comedy masterpieces to which you
could either laugh or cry. This man combines Noel
Coward, Gershwin, Cole Porter, Randy Newman, Tom
Waites, David Byrne and Morrisey, and succeeds in
being different to all of them. See him and his
amazing band at your earliest opportunity."

climbing ceilings at the supermarket,
i was singing neon when these voices started.
at nine pm on the north end road,
drifting aisles at the local tescos,
when these voices started to sing,
when these voices started to sing.
'what are you for? what are you looking for behind my sliding door?
salvation on the shop floor?'
awake all you dreamers,
all you club card redeemers,
awake, awake.
shake, if you dare,
grab a fist of the filtered air and shake, let's shake.
you with your crooked smile in the dairy aisle,
i won't a close encounter by the deli counter.
awake.
awake all you dreamers...
you with those yesterday's eyes, and your bag of french fries,
did you find what you need in the deep freeze?
i don't believe that that is why you're here tonight with me,
it's something you need they don't stock you see.
all of us moths that circle here tonight,
we're drawn to the neon, the neon light.
so swing a basket as the pennies sail away,
your crew awaits.
'i have seen you before and i will see you again,
behind my sliding door,
singing neon,
on the shop-floor.'
you kiss the cashier goodnight, goodnight.
