InfluencesLost and naked melodies

Fabio Orsi’s contribution to this split release, the 37 minute ‘Spring no more and love come in the wind’, is one of the most strangely moving pieces of music I’ve heard in quite some time. Just when you think you’ve got the thing pegged, with its pleasantly undulating droney drift, some oddly distant shouted vocals enter the mix and destroy expectations. With the arrival of this voice the track becomes truly goose bump inducing, and damned if I can actually put my finger on why. Orsi’s way with sounds here is alchemical, combining piano fragments, gospel field recordings, near-death keyboards and fragile drones to make a truly heart-swelling whole. My Cat is an Alien travel to similar Alan Lomax-haunted locations with their contribution, recorded in the Italian alps. Beginning with a blues harmonica lament and their brand of familiar repetitive celestial noises, the brothers Opalio soon lead us into sepulchral alien caverns dripping with glistening sonics and totally spaced guitars. It’s all totally lovely and induces in the listener that deep-space wooziness that seems to come so naturally every time these two play together. MCIAA’s brand of zone outs should be getting old by now, but every time I hear something new from them it sounds totally fresh. The fact that the Opalio’s can consistently create new and strange feelings from a familiar methodologies is a testament to the extraordinary musical chemistry between them. Both halves of this split work well together, MCIAA’s ramshackle sonic adventures providing a counterpoint to Orsi’s more composed piece. Together they make a wonderfully spooked late night double feature. 8/10 -- Cola Nitida (foxydigitalis 20 February, 2007)

"A quiet gem of an album from label Small Voices. Each side of Osci comprises a long drift of electronic drones sourced partly from electric guitar, augmented with delicated shadings of samples and field recordings. There’s a subtle use of processed folk music and pacifying sounds of rural calm, but Orsi’s pastoral idyll keeps slipping into deep melancholy-shades of William Basinski-and even dread. The album comes apart in its latter stages and that’s not bad thing,as it might otherwise have degenerated through lack of variety into just another Ambient washout.the soft density of the sound is replaced by a section of slashing, high frequency cymbal effect, wich in turn gives way to a more brutally treated passage of folk song, underpinned by an ominous repeating thud. What sets the album apart is its careful construction and sense of restrained drama;Orsi’s collaborator Kinetix, credited with reworking and producing the material, might have added crucial input in this regard.Osci is a curious, even perplexing album rather than a truly challenging one,but that’s good enough to be going on with." - Keith Molina, The Wire

Osci is a deep hole into the ground of the loved/hated traditional music. It is a snatch with the past, watching it from unusual perspective, with deforming lens under coloured lights. Osci never meets "Art", it is something like a hack. As the sickle relates about the man, but it's completely unconcerned with their destiny. He speaks the speech of crickets and ants. Time no exist. Telephone are not used to ring and the bees are assembling a "flying saucers" with the elements of an old washing machine. Telephone doesn't know how to ring and voices are gliding in to the dark from mouths full of soil and cheap beer, talking about obscene love proposals. Under the Sun we reverse a big stone and the name of a girl crawls out, into the grass. Someone picks up it from the ground, and put it on the neck as an amulet. Violin's strings clasp the heart in an August night. Flames itching the flesh with pain. Finally our body shows infinite chances. Inside and outside. Every single pore is a hole. Inside is outside. A blink. We would like to shake the skin from bodies, jumping in the fire. A blink. Then we leave by car, disappearing on dusty roads. Sentenced to a slow craziness. All the rumours pushing under the scab. Where the streets are swelling as the veins and the buildings are collapsing, we plant a microphone, cold as a needle. Sav

Fabio Orsi/Valerio Cosi "Thoughts Melt In The Air"
Cd, Preservation (Australia)

The Preservation label presents Thoughts Melt In The Air,
the second album from the pairing of Italian composers
Fabio Orsi and Valerio Cosi. Both Orsi and Cosi
have become recognised widely internationally for their
prolific solo output and kindred spirits in creating
momentous soundscapes that ring with lyrical feeling.
Still in his early 20s, Valerio Cosi has released
a seemingly endless stream of work that swirls
around giddily in a sweep of heady free-jazz
(his main instrument is tenor saxophone), homespun
psychedelia and Krautrock rhythm. Similarly unfaltering
in his release schedule, Fabio Orsi’s work draws from
a more electronic palette with a quieter, pastoral scope
featuring gentle washes of piano, guitar and percussion.
Over these four extended pieces, the pair reveals an
intimate detailing of sound while going widescreen
in pursuit of the epic. Wistful, yearning and melancholic,
Thoughts Melt In the Air traces the celestial, emotive sound
of enigmatic 4AD acts This Mortal Coil and Cocteau Twins,
perfectly pitched between dream-pop vibes and deep ambience.
Moreover, it harks back to the absorbing, meditative qualities
of Popol Vuh and classic-period Eno, often coupled with the primal
and hypnotic tension of rock ‘n roll in its pulse.
Whatever the elements, Thoughts Melt In The Air altogether
represents a great meeting of minds.

Fabio Orsi&Gianluca Becuzzi "Sound Postcards"

Cd (2008) Cold Current (Ita)

Sound Postcards is a sound representation of determinated time-space, of its moods and atmospheres, it's a sort of soundpostcard in which the artists portray a familiar and hypothetical landscape. The listener is induced to ''identify'' the represented subjects through interpretative processes which directly compare sound suggestions with subjective/collective imagination. A semanthic game of mirrors reflecting forms in perpetual transition between auditive dimension and symbolic/mnemonic one.

Fabio Orsi/Valerio Cosi "We Could for Hours"

 Cd (2008) A Silent Place(Ita)

We Could For Hours is instability. It represents the will to open the gates of unknown. It is the dark, whispered sounds and hidden truths. Chaos. And now here it starts, everything takes form, sensations rise, objects acquire colours, distorted vision but still a vision of reality. Everything dances and follows the rhythm of music, an unknown tribal dance.Silence. Sounds follow themselves but always hidden in a veil of mistery, words are mute, everything is listening attentively to the enchanting melody of nature. Mind, free from human limits, goes straight towards a long journey and meets the supernatural and then sinks into the knowledge oblivion. Everything is nothing. Nothing is the time.

Fabio Orsi/Mamuthones "The First Born"

Cd(2008) A Silent Place (Ita)

THE FIRST BORN contains four long tracks of dark, brooding modern psychedelia. From the splashing cymbals and martial beat of the title track to the hypnotic surge of "The infinity within" or the ritualistic feast of "The battle", the whole album feels like an ancient sea ebbing and flowing on some distant alien shore, making for a curiously disjointed listening experience, at the same time peaceful and menacing. The ever-shifting sonic textures evoke both the starchildren krautrockers of old and more recent outer-world explorers but always keep a strong personal identity, firmly rooted in the current weird Italian take on space rock.

ciao F,

Sui gradini, in silenzio... cucchiaino... limone.. laccio emostatico...
"Sole d'agosto ti prego non farmi del male"
