The downside: you're just a tiny bit stuck-up. Seriously, it wouldn't hurt if you stepped back every once in a while and realized that there were other people on Earth besides you. It might humble you a little, but even better, you might meet some totally awesome people you wouldn't have even considered before. There's a lot of cool folks out there, and you might miss them if you're not careful.
5th year (humph!) PhD student at Pitt Grad School of Public Health studying epidemiology. For those dying to know what the hell that really is here's one definition that I like... "Epidemiology, the study of the frequency, distribution and determinants of disease in humans, is a fundamental science of public health. Epidemiologists use many approaches, but the ultimate aim of epidemiologic research is the prevention or effective control of human disease." I am interested in genetics and biomarkers of diseases. Like some day maybe we can take a hair sample, profile your DNA and tell you what chronic diseases you are going to have to watch out for as you go through life. For my dissertation work I am looking at the genetics of osteoporosis in men. I plan to graduate in April!! (yippie!) In August, I started my first real epi job at Children's. I am enrolling patients into a study of brain injury biomarkers. I really like it!
Enough about vocation... lets talk passion! I love to sing!!! (hey, what were YOU thinking??? hehe) I have been singing in choirs for well over 20 years and have been taking voice lessons for about 4 years. Currently I sing with my church choir (First United Methodist Church of Pgh in Shadyside) and Shadyside Choral Society when I can where I am one of the youngest members. I like to sing baroque style and classical music the most. I am a soprano so I am really learning how to come into my own as "DIVA". Still working on it and perfecting it... but getting there! :) Oh yes, we can't forget my tendency to go to Karaoke Tuesday nights with the Myspace Meetup/BarSmart crue at St. James Place Tavern!!!
I am a newlywed (little over a year). Winter is approaching and hubby will be trying to get me to ski. We have a new addition to the house and I think he will be bugging her to join us. My niece moved in this fall to look for jobs/schools. She graduated high school class of 07 and is excited to start some new things! She's at the Pens game with my hubby tonight and I am SUPPOSED to be writing on my dissertation!!! Well this needed to be updated! I will try to keep this updated more than once a year! I really love my fairy background so I think I will keep that a while longer.
