Ostracoda were formed in Norwich in the summer of 2003 by vocalist/guitarist Dan Kelby and guitarist Adam Syson. Drawn together by a bastardised Pearl Jam poster advertising for like-minded musicians and a mutual love for many melodic hard rock acts, they soon hooked up with local musicians with the idea of maybe – just maybe – creating their own original band. So began the usual pattern of song writing, playing bad cover versions of popular rock hits and doing a few local gigs, and after another half decade of excitement, catastrophe, joy, depression, revolving line-ups as well as a handful of self-produced demos, the band was finally completed by Justin Brand (guitars, backing vocals), Matt Purland (bass) and Joe Hancy (drums).
After a stationary 2007 where new songs gestated and one or two members dealt with the realities of having ‘real’ jobs, the band entered Monkey Puzzle House Studios in April 2008 to cut two new songs and, never ones to rest on their laurels, are already writing the follow-up material. With one eye on the most important aspect of new material – that is, the song itself – and the other on a second bout of recording towards the end of the year as well as a few gigs thrown in throughout the summer, it looks like they’ll be nice and busy for a while…
