About me:

Outside the Box Publishing online

This publishing endeavor is the latest in a decade-long literary collaboration between friends who have experienced enough together to consider themselves family. It is an important and valuable way for us – perhaps more than anyone else – to continue believing in the written word. It seems only fitting in a cyberworld so accessible, so democratic in its way, that companies like ours are a natural outgrowth. Publishing books nowadays isn’t that difficult. So many alternative avenues have opened that anyone can write and publish efficiently. The difficult part is finding people that believe in and support your work. That makes a big difference in whether we move ahead or stand still. If we don’t have someone, that one person besides us, how can we expect the best of ourselves? In many ways, our commitment to literature is an extension of our commitment to fellowship. We have been fortunate enough to have one another to keep us creatively and philosophically alive, despite the setbacks and detours and plain old realities of modern existence. Outside the Box Publishing is our way of opening up the conversation and allowing other serious writers into the fold.

Outside the Box Publishing Jump Out of the Gate in 2007
Jersey City-based writers Dax-Devlon Ross & Derek Beres see four new books to life

If the ritual of the New Year involves setting intentions, it’s easy to see the course of Outside the Box Publishing. Founded in 2005 by writers Dax-Devlon Ross and Derek Beres, the duo are preparing four new books for publication, ranging from Latin music and street art salesmanship to a novel about reconciling your past and a collection of insightful essays. To be published in March and April 2007, these four impressive books are guaranteed to bring attention to these Jersey City writers and their efforts to help promote the changing face of the letters industry.

Tangled Web: The Best Music Tour You Never Heard Of
Derek Beres
Photojournalist Derek Beres spent one month on the road documenting Musica Fresca, a Latin music tour featuring Yerba Buena, Voltio, Akwid and Radio Mundial. Hired by Yahoo!Telemundo to keep a daily online record of 15 national dates, Beres went from blogging the most ambitious Hispanic tour ever produced in America to uncovering the behind-the-scenes follies of greed and deception. Tangled Web is an eye-opening, informative and honest journey through the modern music industry, and how by weaving through the pitfalls of industry devotion to the arts reigns supreme.

The Underdog's Manifesto: A Guerilla Artist's Path to Independence
Creature w/Dax-Devlon Ross
Throughout history underdogs have always spirited the most authentic, audacious and original art of their day. In the process they’ve spawned movements forever altering the creative landscape. NYC hip-hop artist Creature (among many others) whose voices, visions and spirit canvas the pages of The Underdog’s Manifesto, are without question continuing that tradition.

A Staircase of Words Vol. 1: Essays
Dax-Devlon Ross & Derek Beres
The inaugural edition of an annual series by OTB founders Dax-Devlon Ross and Derek Beres, this first volume of A Staircase of Words features numerous essays by the two writers. Centered around two main essays written after a 12-mile journey down New York’s Broadway, the authors pen their thoughts on music, politics, cinema, social equality and a host of other topics.

The Best of Intentions
Dax-Devlon Ross
The Best of Intentions is the timeless story of the soul searcher striving to reconcile past with present, theory with practice. It interrogates the promises of opportunity and unmasks the perils of upward mobility; pits our undying hunger for spiritual connectedness against our insatiable thirst for worldly validation. Most of all, it explores the individual’s fight to live with integrity in a confusing world devoid of easy answers.

What better way to impress that indie kid with the glasses and tattoos? Let them catch you reading a book.

"The only dream worth having is to dream that you will live while you are alive, and die only when you are dead. To love, to be loved. To never forget your own insignificance. To never get used to the unspeakable violence and vulgar disparity of the life around you. To seek joy in the saddest places. To pursue beauty to its lair. To never simplify what is complicated or complicate what is simple. To respect strength, never power. Above all to watch. To try and understand. To never look away. And never, never to forget." - Arundhati Roy
