The Speckman Tutoring & Learning Center (TLC) is a service area employing full-time and part-time instructors who also provide classroom instruction. Its mission is to support student learning in a manner that empowers students to take responsibility for their own learning and life. We seek to help students recognize their own potential and to help them improve skills they need to function more effectively in an increasingly diverse and demanding college environment. The Speckman Tutoring & Learning Center supports student learning by offering the following services: Tutoring: Tutoring is offered at no additional charge to students—currently in math, computers, accounting, science, and Spanish. The math and computer tutoring are provided every hour the TLC is open. Other subjects are provided on a more limited schedule. Computer Assistance: Tutors and staff are available for students needing help with Windows operating systems, Blackboard, My OTC, Microsoft Office software, and other academic computer applications. Consultations: Individualized and/or small group study support for students who need assistance with memory, time management, textbook reading, note taking, and other study areas. Students work on an appointment basis with an instructor to receive this assistance. Seminars: Study skills and college success seminars led by TLC instructors are available on DVD for students to check out and view. These seminars are also available (on DVD or live) to faculty who choose to schedule them for their classes. Courses: Self-paced courses currently in the areas of grammar, mathematics, pre-computer skills, reading comprehension and rate improvement, study strategies, vocabulary, and writing. Connections Learning Communities: These were first piloted in the Fall of 2006 and 2007. These programs involved cohorts of students requiring both developmental math and English who took their core classes together and received extra support and mentoring from the TLC instructors. Tracking Needs: The TLC staff tracks any requests made for additional tutoring or other services the TLC does not currently offer. A note is made of any request and needed services are expanded if feasible. Click Here to e-mail the TLC for further details or contact tlconline@otc.edu
