Brought to life in the summer of 2008 Ottersgear made it’s first steps in Quernmore, Lancaster, on the tip of the Trough of Bowland, as a recording project by One Chip Potato frontman Mikey Kenney. The first EP (Rising Balloon) tells the tale of an alcoholic who, in need of rest, walks into the lonely company of the trough and overcomes his struggle with alcohol. using folk themes and mythological metaphors Ottersgear opens the listener’s mind eye to the world Mikey has made for himself out on the moors. Ottersgear is now being performed as a live project with Mikey leading an ensemble of talented musicians, including Andrew Raven (Hows My Pop?), Dan Haywood (Dan Haywood’s New Hawks), Mia Bleach (Dan Haywoood’s New Hawks), Blind Simon Pilot (Three Dimensional Tanks) and Charley Weatherill.
WELCOME TO OTTERSGEAR-
Our rambling protagonist, whilst out on his daily stroll about the pike, comes across a balloon. His simple mind thinks the balloon may be god; he has never seen a balloon before (or God for that matter). In his pursuit of the balloon he is trapped by sinful faeries that like to partake in the dance and the drink. They teach their ways to our innocent chap and he falls into their mindless trap. Waking in the woods the next day, terribly hungover and full of regret over his distraction from his objective he makes his way home. On his way he promises never to fall prey to such things again. He finds the balloon once more.
"My single 'Quest for Rest' has just been released by virtual record label VirtuaVinyl.com using their splendid flash 45 player. You can find it below complete with b-side 'Brown Morning'. The player features Paul Walmsley's mastered versions of the track which you won't find on the myspace player. You can embed the vinyls to your pages, whatever site they're on, and it also gives you the option of pouring paint over the vinyl and even shooting holes into it (for the psychotics). Have a go!" - Mikey K
Homemade Lemonade - Lancaster based purveyers of live electronically enhanced indie folk:
"Loops,
drones and spiralling riffs with mantra-like vocals characterise much
of their live set. Crashing waves of guitar under a chant of ‘I can
walk on water’ … give way to a bleak early-Factory Records sound
updated with electronic effects … reaching an impressive drawn out
climax in the explosive ‘Bliss, Ostensibly.’"(Lunecy Review, July 2009).
Pencil In - Preston-based alternative rock.
Pencil
In are a four piece alternative rock band hailing from the North West
of England. Coupling the incredible vocal clarity of Bill Orrick with
layered, effect soaked, post rock soundscapes and waves of raunchy
balls-out heaviness, theirs is a truly unique sound.
Satellites - 4-piece based in Lancaster Post-rock, ambient, progressive - "a double measure of post rock served with a generous helping of progressiveness."
Quisling
Meat - This is a mystery guest of sorts. He's been in Dry Green, the
Pier Group, the Thens, the Plastic Noons, and more. He's been away for
a while, but he's back in Lancaster. Don't miss this!
