Our Fold - an Indie Rock band from Westhoughton near Bolton that consists of:
Damien Riley – Lead Singer/Guitar
Dan McLaren – Bass
Ryan Ambler – Drums
Aziz Ibrahim – Lead Guitar
In the spring of 2005, two young college students and aspiring musicians, Ryan Ambler a drummer and Dan McLaren a guitarist are introduced into a circle of friends with a mutual interest in music. One of these friends would be Damien Riley who was already rhythm guitarist and backing singer for another local band. It was at his then house, number 24 Church Street Westhoughton, where this friendship grew over bottle after bottle of Jack Daniels and crude, early-morning live recordings in the back room. Only on listening back did Damien, Ryan and Dan realize there was raw magic in these little improvised compositions and decided to take it seriously. With turning Ryan’s garage into a mock rehearsal room, Damien’s vocal microphone taped to a sweeping brush and Dan turning from 6 strings to 4 the band was almost complete. All they needed was a name.
As the tunes began to flow and the neighbours complained, the boys sorted out a new place to develop their sound. They were now set up at an old converted Bolton mill called D.O.A Studios. It didn’t take long before friends were invited to little intimate rehearsal room gigs and then back to Church Street where the early morning recording sessions would start once again. One time in particular when a close friend of the band didn’t want anyone to be there who wasn’t in ‘our fold’(meaning the circle of friends that the band had grown around). That was it, the band had their name. Our Fold was born.
Soon, the band had their first few gigs booked. The first 2 being on the same evening. One in Bolton town centre to only a handful of people then immediately packing their equipment down to play an hour set in their packed out local pub, The White Horse. Overnight, Our Fold had become one of the most talked about bands in Bolton. This was only the beginning.
There then followed the 3 lads gigging up and down the country headlining small venues to opening for bands they had only heard on the radio. This helped them gain a local but dedicated following that were creating a huge demand for recordings. This saw the band head to Red Cat Studios, Standish, for their first recording session. The Demo was sold at the bands first sold out gig in Bolton. Unknowingly to the band, a close friend had passed on a copy of this demo to Unique Music Management Company who the band signed with.
After the band had been into more recording studios in Manchester and Doncaster, they entered themselves into the Road to V competition with one of the stronger recordings Face To The Sky. Out of over 3000 bands, Our Fold made it to the last 14. After the publicity and success the band gained from this, the management brought Scorpia Records along and the band signed in 2007. This pushed the band and got them slots at the Reading and Leeds festivals along with Glastonbury. After playing strong energetic sets, Our Fold caught the eye of Glaswegian label D Set Records who are now involved with the band.
The start of 2009 saw a big change in the Our Fold camp. The band seemed to be lacking in something, but still impressed former Stone Roses guitarist Aziz Ibrahim, who is now the lead guitarist of the band. With his unique style and amazing playing ability, he gave the band a new lease of life. They are now more confident than ever and are looking forward to the release of their debut single and album later this year.
