Our Friend Steve's Blurbs |
About me:
Jack Steven Cornejo was a young man that managed to touch many lives in many different ways. Tragically, at the age of 23 in the early morning of June 25th, 2005, his life was taken away after being shot in the back by Brandon Paul Gotwalt.
There have been many obstacles in trying to obtain justice for Steve, these range from the lack of co-operation from the police department, to suspected protection of Mr. Gotwalt. Mr. Robert Horan decided to leave the case up to the grand jury and made no recommendations. The grand jury decided to not press charges against Mr. Gotwalt and therefore he cannot be held criminally accountable.
After almost two years of heartache and turmoil, all that the Cornejo family can do is press civil charges against Mr. Gotwalt for wrongful death. It is our hope that now after two days of trial, the jury will come back with a judgement for the Cornejo family on the predicted date of March 14th 2007.
Even if we win this trial, Steve is still gone. He will always be missed, we will still cry for him. We were still robbed of his smiles, his jokes, and his beautiful self. Despite the efforts of the defense to make Steve look like a bad person, a thug, a hulk, a drunk, everyone knows the truth.
Steve was a sweet and caring man who wanted nothing else than to have the world enjoy life with him. He wanted everyone involved. He was unarmed. He was beat in the face and in various other parts of his body with the butt of the gun, he was shot in the back, and the pellets from this supposedly non-lethal type of bullet, engorged themselves within him causing his death. No matter what Mr. Gotwalt, or his attorney try to say, the real victim is no longer with us. And his killer, free to live his life as he see fits.
Our friend Steve is run by Steve's loving friends. We only hope to keep his memory alive despite the injustices that came with his death.
UPDATE
Wednesday, March 14th, 2007
The jury found judgement for the PLAINTIFF (Austin Cornejo, Steve's dad) and awarded him damages totaling $1,970,000. This is validation, that there are people out there capable of doing the right thing. THANK YOU to our attorney and to the jury for seeing the truth in a sea of lies. Most importantly, thank you to every single member of Steve's family as well as all of his friends for their unwavering support in the quest for truth. It is because of everyone's love and support that Steve's memory lives on as who he really was: An intelligent young man with an endless love for life and all the people in it.
UPDATE
August 2007
Although Brandon Paul Gotwalt was ordered to pay the Cornejo family close to two million dollars, the family has yet to receive a single penny. He has now filed for bankruptcy and does not have to pay the family. Unfortunately, in order to continue the fight for justice, the Cornejo family needs fifteen thousand dollars to start a case challenging this drastic turn of events. Please send any ideas / offers from your part no matter how large or small so that we can help them get the funding they need as soon as possible. There may be a paypal link set up here soon so that you may donate directly. Please get the word out and thank you for your continued support for Our Friend Steve.
UPDATE
October 2007
Thank you to all the faithful readers of newspapers, blogs and etc things relating to Steve's case. It is through word of mouth that these great news have reached us. PATRICK MCDADE who is running for Fairfax's Commonwealth Attorney has made a PROMISE to reopen the criminal case against Brandon Gotwalt in order to bring him to justice. Please get the word out and vote on NOVEMBER 6th 2007 for the better candidate. You can go to his webpage here:

Who I'd like to meet:
We would like to give our deepest thanks to Mr. Amadeo and Mr. Daniels. Because of their valiant efforts, Steve did not die alone. Because of their valiant efforts, in the last moments of Steve's life, he was able to see people try to revive him. In his last moments of life, Steve was able to believe in humanity, and although he died, he died in the arms of two great men who could have just as easily stayed in their apartments pretending they had seen nothing.
