TRUE's Interests
|
| General | TRUE STORY - PITCH - THE INVITATION TO ACTION -
CALLING ALL CREATIVES AND PHILANTHROPISTS
Don’t be another bleeding heart that just bleeds out and dies do something...
-----------------------------------------------------------
// True Story is… - Taking the hassle out of doing good and finding out where others are doing the same. A network for any social work acting in the interest of humanity or the preservation of the planet and a sustainable future.
// A social awareness media hub whose principle function is to gather and produce multimedia material for a searchable specialist archive.
// In its community interest activity it will brand, collate relevant copy, assist with a live event, produce coverage footage and audio-visual documentation of that event and the clients regular function to post on a website: This to serve as an incorporative project where staff of the charity/non-profit client will be mentored as onsite/on-project training in order to be better skills equipped so future promotion, marketing and PR can be self-empowered and minimise dependence on 3rd party or exterior resource or the need for in house services.
//This material then joins the on-demand archive of social awareness footage.
True story will act as a stock selection or multimedia press wire for broadcast, print or web journalists, academics, researchers and any interested individuals, parties and organisations seeking ideas for promotion or social education in this niche market area and sector.
// A showcase for freelancers in the human resource pool and smaller affiliate orgs in a rolling ranked chart database highlighting prolific or high-quality contributors from disadvantaged or semi-professional backgrounds so they may seek their own employment as individuals or by forming their own social awareness media co-ops. | | Music | I've had an idea and I think I'm running with it already without realising.
I'm getting together a MySpace collective of artists obviously persons you know that might be interested please contact them also.
Also do not presume that after the initial hype and creativity I shan't need consolidation - So accountants, business consultants, solicitors (copyright/media law), press for coverage, academics for product development/research and promoters for holding events will all be required but lets open the doors to revolution and see who arrives.
Its part of a business plan I had a few years back but didn't have the whereforall to get it kick-started - or the contacts for that matter.
I'm in a slightly better position now but regardless MySpace and other such internet communities seem to have presented me with an opportunity.
The proposition - a company that represents charities/non-profit organisations to show off their new campaigns and also give them a relevant product to sell for fundraising purposes - BUT utilising some of the artists that would normally be considered clients of the charities - initially focusing on homelessness and mental health as there is a lot of untapped creativity there - that and they are my personal banners to hold and my primary concerns.
Next would be certain disability trusts and then human rights/prison organisations but direction can change depending on persons involved.
The first step was to create a product that people can start basing ideas around - a template or frame into which people can start hurling creativity and ideas.
A character - a logo - a brand - a hero.
That’s my selfish part over as I get to write that story - obviously only the first draft and then we'll start producing other things and I’m not so stupid that I won't take advice from others involved to create the best product.
My intention on MySpace and within other similar internet communities was to simply find illustrators for the story but WHY STOP THERE?
A previous company introduced the concept to me of media pack creation where you pull in all mediums to bulk up merchandise for an idea - cds, computer programmers etc... not a concept that takes much imagination but once you’re in the practice of it marketable product roll off the pen.
If that could be provided for a charity - at a fractional cost to conventional services - using a collective of service users and young artists - potentially even using their own equipment - then surely that’s worth a shot? Definitely something worthwhile to do with the time people seem to be devoting to MySpace and internet browsing.
So short films (fiction or illustrative documentary), animations, audio books, general cds etc.. - all very plausible to create at minimal cost. Distribution can occur via the web..
BUT FIRST - introduce the idea to creatives in the London area and brainstorm. Introduce them to one another and get projects started - a space within a space.
After there is a suitable number get together in a room above a pub (make them public houses in the most conventional sense of the word) and start some networking and real world progress.
I know you people are out there and I know we all want to do something. Don't let apprehension prevent you from offering what you have.
ALSO to organise some music/entertainment events also - to aid the word so the venue will rapidly grow so we do need entertainers and lets prove Miss Sandi Thom wrong - this isn’t a world that doesn’t care..
Even if you're a hotshot consultant to creative businesses then just your verbal input might be of assistance. And if nothing else wish me luck and keep an eye out cos youll hear from me again in some context.
If you know of anyone at all that might be interested pass it on...
AND REMEMBER - I'm starting in London not finishing there. E-mail stretches from Thailand to Timbuctoo and can get images and text cross-continent before I can finish this sentence.
Even if it's just to make friends minus the influencing people you're welcome for the ride.
If you do get in touch state your name, rank, serial number and how you or friends might be able to assist.
Curiosity killed a cat - humans are impervious.
As they always say on Sesame street -
Use your IM-A-gination! You can help!
So, ball rolling...
----------------------------------------------------------
Long term I am hoping to encourage a number of local contributors thereby building a community - community is always valuable to anyone.
Lets begin a discussion - let us begin.
AND HAVING BEGUN - True Story is so much more than the above... this was what I envisaged several years ago. It seems I've learnt certain lessons since then that have nurtured the seed of an idea - Attend www.true-story.co.uk - to see how. | | Movies | I have been following a line for several years now into which at some stage will bloom into a business plan and take the stage (mixed metaphors are wonderful).
I sent out many e-mails to creatives and philanthropists across the land and have been talking to organisations and individuals, mainly in west London, Birmingham and Brighton to try to form a string of small string of dedicated persons to work with. Now payment was to take the form of incentive/benefits.
I have worked out a fashion by which it can involve local businesses, charities, creatives and also fuel a community to feed the business for a second generation of employees at the same time as utilising communities already out there with minimal overheads and being flexible enough to focus spare time of altruists and also those looking to build work experience - but most importantly everyone has fun on the journey and helps people.
The above is an e-mail I sent out across the MySpace community, which constitutes a basic outline of what I have been talking to persons about. It has generated an amount of interest but needs now to take its first steps. With a little help the hype can become something real... | | Television | That is the group - a collective of artists and service users creating fundraising material, anything from comic books to films, to music, to live fashion shows - in order to provide charities/non-profits with a product to sell when they can't afford to make them themselves.
It improves the quality - provides a proving ground for interns and college students who are enterprising enough to want to do something humanitarian with their time.
Altruism and entrepreneurship can be hugely exploited and via those being drawn to the prospect of pay for jobs they don't enjoy for causes and companies they don't care about and even worse that don't care about them - If the efforts were less scatter shot or smothered something incredible could be done.
During the GAP year in England - a huge base of talent that generally goes overseas to "heal the world". Whilst with the right organization this can be worthwhile and an incredible personal expansion experience.. in other cases the GAP year is squandered as a chance to expand the mind by other means. I am certainly not beyond reproach – I conquered no worlds during my gap year.
Why not involve that talent base and also seek consultancy from large businesses to validate internships and create a recruitment arena also?
But not just those gap year hopefuls but anyone in the limbo of slack time but holding ability – just out of university – looking to change career but unable to prove track record on a fresh track or on incapacity benefit or parole with no one willing to financially take the risk – if there’s no investment in the person just an open gallery then no one looses.
The potential is there - A few years ago I approached some representatives of the Brighton Big Issue with this, a small children’s publisher, an online review site, a business start up consultant and such like and it was all deemed as feasible but just difficult to pitch due to the lack of tangible commodity - e.g. NOTHING YOU CAN HOLD IN YOUR HAND!
But for me that’s the beauty - no real overheads, just talent, passion and enthusiasm carrying a current of artistic endeavor and kindness consolidated at points by spotlighting other more tangible business ventures.
| | Books | My experience is firstly as a writer. Time in arts journalism, arts consultancy and projects, short story writing, a few years as Head of writing for a production company (mainly animation) and then assistant producer for a satellite channel, also some sales and marketing along the way.
Not really the right CV to be setting this up but I know what I'm doing and I know when to hand over the reigns to the right people.
I am getting a lot of really good feedback from people and certainly some talented hands back in this direction. It just needs nurturing - so thanks for the manure, the idea is planted and on its way.
| | Heroes | My heroes are -
Anyone of you that can see the promise in dreams - can take a chance with what we call spare time; can work with the talents we have to do something, anything...
And I'm not asking for something terribly arduous - I'm asking for a contribution of talent, a chance to exercise your passion with like-minded individuals in a collective that could become at worst a worthwhile past time - at best... acorns.
Think of every person, every conversation you've had with someone that wanted to do something for charity, think of the people that wanted to create something, to expend energy in a direction... I'm just suggesting that this could be one. One direction...

Who I'd like to meet:
// What is our Story?
True Story are a socially aware multimedia production enterprise with a specialist client base of charities and non-profit organisations. We are a catalyst and stimulant to access creativity and capabilities - facilitating a platform for effective promotion, fundraising and campaigning.
// Our commitment is to raise profiles and highlight worthwhile projects via creative networking and fundraising events or activity. Forging links and affiliations to pool resources and talent, orchestrating their expertise towards organisations, individuals, projects and products congruent with the True Story manifesto and core intention.
// What we do?
True Story seek to offer total solution packages and process trouble shooting.
This assistance taking the form of marketing and PR brand consultancy.
// Through advancement and empowerment of the beneficiaries and staff that constitute True Story clients, those disenfranchised individuals, organisations and muted minorities will receive the professional education and training to enable them to continue the work that True Story begun with their initial involvement; stabilising and propagating public interest in their activity.
// To address the future survival of organisations such as ourselves True Story shall be inducting those in burgeoning careers, supporting and orientating them with career guidance and relevant real industry mentoring. As a collective, formulating a media industry and general social awareness and educational growth lobby.
// What does that mean for you?
We make people look better and then teach people how to make themselves look better.
// True story deals with presentation and accessibility in an industry that often neglects delivery for content. By placing a sheen on the packaging people are more likely to swallow the often difficult task of taking action for a cause that is not their own.
// Persons within altruistic or social professions often forget the journey they took to get there or the events that spurred their interest and committed them to a cause. It may have been forced upon them through illness or a death in the family or hardship in childhood or maybe just an unwillingness to see those they love grow up in certain conditions. All that research, passion and dedication can be lost if ineffectively communicated.
// True Story is there to make sure your story is told correctly. As a non-profit or charity organisation or individual campaigner without the time to invest in that promotion or building that platform to shout from, even if it is worth shouting about - True Story can take that burden from your shoulders - interpret your message, write the words, build the websites, design the visuals, take the photos, make the documentaries, cover the events, and give you the materials and product to sell to raise funds to continue your activity - but more importantly educate, train and enable you to continue to do that for yourselves once we have moved off into the sunset to help the next village of stranded and struggling outsiders in a corporate world that often has these services in house.
// Our collective is made up of individuals who are at a stage of their career at which it makes sense to endeavor with a lesser financial payment - either as they need to build confidence and a track record or CV, to recover that same track record or CV or they are so established that they simply wish to return a little of their knowledge and expertise by reducing or waving rates and indulging a passion for positive change. Thus keeping our rates affordable and our package or solutions or client directed troubleshooting as comprehensive as possible whilst remaining affordable.
