Brouth to you by The Schalltot collective a.s.b.l. with the support of Kulturfabrik a.s.b.l., the OUT OF THE CROWD festival takes place at Kulturfabrik in Esch/Alz. - Luxembourg/Europe on SAT. 18th APRIL 2009.
2009 will see its 6th edition. Over the past 5 years, the OOTC has established a good draw and gained maturity in order to become one of the most important and anticipated "underground" festivals in the Grand-Duchy of Luxembourg. The OOTC fest offers music beyond limits, bands and artists we strongly feel related to, we appreciate, we worship. It's far more than just 'bla bla' mainstream and stereotype. It's about reaching further, seeking something new, something eclectic, unconventionnal, bringing folks together, sharing feelings and thoughts and last but not least PAAAAAARTYYYYYY!!!
Alongside the showcases, there will be - same as the previous years - some distros and merch stands, vegetarian/vegan food and an ART EXHIBITION @ the Kulturfabrik gallery starting the day of the festival and going until 2nd MAY !!!ADMISSION IS FREE!!!

GOD IS AN ASTRONAUT (Eir / Revive Rec.) www.godisanastronaut.com www.myspace.com/godisanastronaut www.superadmusic.com
Hailing from Glen of the Downs / Ireland, trance-inducing, post-rock instrumental trio GOD IS AN ASTRONAUT formed in 2002 and have already released 3 albums and one EP. GIAA’s storied live performances have the unique ability to effortlessly ascend / transcend at any given moment, reaching bold crescendos of both of dim shimmer and blinding incandescence. The band make use of projected, self-edited video footage along with impressive lighting arrangements to form what it calls, a "full audio visual show", with each song accompanied by its own video. GOD IS AN ASTRONAUT’s marriage of raw power and delicate beauty has drawn comparisons to the works of like-minded indie acts Explosions in the Sky and Mogwai.
Considered by many to be the most intense live act ever to come from Ireland, their shows are accompanied by stunning and sometimes controversial visuals. The band have played a number of shows/tours in U.K., Germany, Spain, Holland, Russia, Turkey (headlining Rock for Peace - 20,000 fans) and sell out shows in both Portugal, Belgium, England, Ireland and in the USA.
“Beauty and menace… fantastically broad and lush soundscapes… it's like watching a thunderhead slowly approach from the distance; dark, towering and fat with tension.” – DROWNED IN SOUND
"While they share the same wavelength as Mogwai and Explosions in the Sky, the potency and discipline in the playing sets them apart from the post-rock masses." - The Irish Times
"Though the world is currently over-run with instrumentalists, GIAA stand out as one of the few unique acts the scene has to offer." - screamingbloodymess.com “From start to finish they glow with unique focused intensity.” - UNCUT
Originally formed in late nineties Australia, PIVOT have until recently remained hidden from the international radar. Before long, word of this young antipodean trio with something to say reached the office and ears of Warp Records, who upon hearing their demonstration cassette, and being gifted an ornamental hotdog, immediately signed them up for a 16 album deal starting with the epic O Soundtrack My Heart…
PIVOT are no longer strangers to musical endeavour, its members having recorded and performed in collaboration with the likes of Prefuse73, Flanger, Savath & Savalas, Qua, Jan Jelinek, Burnt Friedman and Damo Suzuki, along with several international releases of their own side projects, past and present (Roam the Hello Clouds, Triosk, Dave
Miller’s minimal techno for Background records and Laurenz Pike’s solo drum explorations).
PIVOT are a rare combination of the emotive and cerebral, harnessing the raw garage energy of three explosive musicians alongside intensive studio production. Part prog-warrior, part slacker-geek, their music and approach provide something much needed in a world of nowhere music (being listened to in nowhere bars). Equally influenced by synthesizer luminaries Vangelis and Jean-Michel Jarre, Warp label mates Autechre and the post-punk new wave of Talking Heads, PIVOT’s Warp album debut O Soundtrack My Heart exudes an omnipresent sense of melodrama and what can only be described as a sort of ‘apocalyptic joy’. With incredible live shows and the “slacker-nerd grooves” (Time Out) of debut Warp EP In The Blood already impressing the so oft cynical UK / AUS press corps, O Soundtrack My Heart is ready to win yours too.
With 2008 featuring a sold-out Australian album tour, Sigur Ros support dates, a nine month UK and European stint, including a date with the legendary Yellow Magic Orchestra and their debut Glastonbury Festival appearance – PIVOT are kicking off their 2009 live itinerary with Laneway Festival dates, shows with the Arctic Monkeys, and the godfather of electro - Gary Numan, before heading back to the UK and mainland Europe.

Minnaars is five young talented gents from Leicester / England, formed from previous members of popular underground bands; Tired Irie, Computerman and The Traces. Minnaars are intense. Minnaars are dancey. Minnaars are epic. With their infectiously catchy mix of indie and dance-punk spiced with the best ingredients of modern pop, they have left many people and crowds tongue-tied (amongst which Forward Russia’s Tom Woodhead who finally produced both their first ep and their upcoming full-length) and have for sure a promising future ahead. Often compared to UK’s actual best indie, wave-pop export Foals, Minnaars add to that sound an incredible variety through the use of loops, unpredictable structures and duelling synth and guitar. Surely an exciting UK band to watch in 2009.
Volcano! formed in Chicago (undisputable stronghold of American mathrock) in summer 2003. They believed in the importance of fusing improvisation and abstraction, with pop melodies and harmonies - a beautiful, epic noise. They had all of the right tools to execute these big ideas. In fall 2005 Volcano! released their debut album “Beautiful Seizure” on The Leaf label. This album strived for maximal intensity in all directions - the loudest louds, the quietest quiets, the prettiest pretties, the wierdest wierds, and the most extreme juxtapositions between all of these elements. Maximal intensity is exciting, but exhausting. So Volcano! changed tack as they wrote songs for their sophomore release “Paperwork” which has seen the light of day in August 2008. More fun, more humor - still serious, but not sober. They sing about absurd workplace/relationship/human condition issues in a more direct manner. The songs are more propulsive - less decay, more build, cleaner. They process sounds using cell-phone technology. They incorporate animal noises into dance beats. They play Banda and Ballads. They sing about the good & bad of jobs, Richard Pryor, recovering from failed sex attempts, and indictments of Bono's phony philanthropy efforts. The best part is that no matter what they do, it all sounds like Volcano! This is because there is no ironic detachment, or genre play - Volcano! is a paper towel that absorbs influences through capillary action. Their fibers remain in tact no matter what they soak up.
Petrograd are and will probably be the most honest and popular pop-punk band Luxembourg will ever see. With over 15000 records sold across the world, more than 400 shows played all over Europe, 4 albums and numerous 7” contributions for animal rights and other charity issues (amongst which one split 7” w/ J Church and one w/ Active Minds), Petrograd have gained a remarkable spot in the socio-political / anti-commercialist punk-rock field. After the band split in 2004, several members went on with other musical endeavors but none of them could reach the status Petrograd has attained. So it was just a matter of time until we’d have them back, and now they are for good. A 5th record is already in the works and tours through South America and Russia are to follow. They’ll kick off with a first show (mostly new songs) at the OOTC6 and we’re really excited about that.
Nevada City’s sBach is Spencer Seim’s (the man/creature/troglodyte who serves as the feral axe shredder of Hella and the skins man of The Advantage) new geek-o-phonie. sBACH is frenetic, akin to the collective sights, sounds and sugar rushes in the heads of an entire elementary school being locked into a Chuck E. Cheese franchise while having to subside on an all you can eat buffet of Fun Dip and Pixie Stix as the animatronic band dishes out phosphorescent doom riffs while running amok with the blips and bleeps. Seim is the master of playing his instruments in just the right way enabling a whole frequency of sounds. Taking cues from the choppy spazz-math of Hella and the 8 bit Nintendo cacophony of The Advantage, Seim utilizes the trademarks steez and proclivities of his two musical ventures to create a new one which morphs into a kitschy, stoner rock fueled archfiend chock full of bastardized jazz rhythms and chicken scratch electronica. With the grating jingles and chimes of an explosion at a pinball machine factory and the caffeinated scour of just about any song that features Seim's vivid musical talent, sBACH will fray the senses and leave you begging for more.

WE VERSUS THE SHARK (US / Hello Sir Rec.) www.weversustheshark.com www.myspace.com/weversustheshark www.hellosirrecords.com www.myspace.com/hellosirrecords
We Versus the Shark is one of the best bands to come out of Athens / GA since Neutral Milk Hotel. Hands down. For the past four years, they have been evolving from the mathy dance rock of their early releases to mixing gnarly riffs, tones and noise with carefully crafted pop songs. We Versus the Shark is always going full force and they rule shit. If you like your indie-rock a little on volatile and caustic side with a little spazz-core thrown in for good measure, then WVTS might be exactly the band you are looking for. Their latest effort ‘Dirty Versions’ is a loud and abrasive blast of dizzying intensity that seems to want to uncontrollably veer into a million directions at once, but it’s also a little funky so you can dance to it as well. Just imagine (if you will) a synthesis of The Blood Brothers and Q And Not U and all the shrieking, mathy guitars, crashing cymbals, and spastic propulsion that those bands conjure up. We Versus The Shark is the audio equivalent of a kid’s seventh birthday party at the local pool with all that splashing, running, jumping, sugary twitching, and youthful energy puncturing the day… and that one kid that leaves a warm spot wherever he goes. Like that except that the smell of sunscreen has been replaced with cigarettes and sweat.
Très.B are from Maastricht / The Netherlands, though none of them is dutch to the core: Polish singer, half Danish/half English drummer and a half Dutch/half American guitarist. They play beautiful melancholy pop with a seductive force at hand; siren Misia Furtak. The charming lady breathes, sighs, shouts, screams and sings as if her life depended on it. She often got compared to Björk and PJ Harvey. This trait fits perfectly with the undercooled pop that, on a musical level, flirts as well with PJ Harvey and, to a lesser extent, Sonic Youth.
Hailing from England's second city (Birmingham for the uneducated), Blakfish play some of the most brutal, fresh-sounding and yet enjoyable hardcore you'll have heard in a long while. Recently signed to Hassle Rec. (Anti-Flag, Thursday, Alexisonfire, Cancer Bats, Propaghandi, Four Year Strong, City And Colour)– home of Vagrant within the UK - Blakfish armed with a factory full of machine gun riffs, blood curdling melodies and a touring ethic which has seen them take in every road ever built in the UK, closely followed by Europe, these four young brummies seem intent on creating a new revolution rock for the masses. Having been playing together for over 10 years, and still barely in their 20s, their dedication to the cause is certainly not in question. With each stride taken thus far, Blakfish have made themselves sound braver and bolder, this being a testament to their raw, blood dripping ambition to push 'heavy' music over the familiar boundaries. Their much anticipated upcoming offering ‘Champions’ ( recorded at Redroom Studios in Seattle / file under Mastodon, Minus The Bear, These Arms Are Snakes) is, frankly, a brutal record. It straddles genres and feelings, choking you and caressing you at the same time. The influences of Seattle and numerous American hardcore bands are there, but it’s just as much a product of - and reaction to - their hometown of Birmingham, and the socio-political dilemma this country has been in for a very long time now. But it’s not necessarily about the politics. It can be if you want it to be, but really, the state of the world is just one of many disparate things that influenced this record. First and foremost is that you just press play and enjoy it. The band may have named it ‘Champions’ for a laugh, but, actually, they’re not far from the truth at all. Because, whether they intended it or not, Blakfish are contenders for the crown of a new kind of hardcore, one that deviates from tried and tested tracks and which keeps its tongue firmly in its cheek before biting hard and chewing, swallowing it down and then throwing it back up again.
The music of the Kitshickers is reduced to the essential - an interesting contrast between sound worlds on many levels, complex arranged songs and minimalistic-intimistic riffs. Their music is not easily accessible to everyone but who can lie back, can let the music work and is not caught in the simplicity of the mainstream, discovers a new grounds - the sound galaxy of the Kitshickers. At times heavy and sludgy, at times ruminant and mesmerizing, the Kitshickers manage to mix up influences from such heavyweights like Isis, Mastodon and the Mahavishnu Orchestra to create a world of its own.
