REVIEW FROM NORTHWEST BANDS WEB MANAGER

OUT ON BAIL ... OUT OF THIS WORLD!!

Managed to get down to the Kings Arms last night and catch a bit of Out On Bail. Absolutely blown away with these guys, top notch, note perfect, tight as a polticians arse! I'd highly recommend seeing these guys in action, as you literally will be blown away by the showmanship, lack of ego, and enthusiasm. Also, got to mention their excellent PA system. All the levels were spot on, and you could easily pick out all the instruments, and the solos cut through like a dream. Mr.NWB not meant to show favouritism? - Well! what the hell, these boys were too damn good!

10th May 2008

A first time on a Saturday night in Shaw for the band (although they have played the Cricketer’s on a Sunday afternoon spot to a more “eclectic” audience), they had just about anyone who was anyone in the Cricketer’s “Rock Fan” audience there waiting to be pleased. With the likes of Rosie and Big Ken, Alex (who had managed to remove his lead boots that night), Rockin’ Ken, Richard, ‘Lex, Charlie and Norma, Big Harry and the Eccles crew plus many more (you know who you are!) in attendance it would have to be a top notch band if THEY were going to be “moved”

.

Opening up with an excellent cover of Ac/Dc’s “Hell Aint a Bad Place”, followed by the likes of Thin Lizzy – “Are You Ready” and “Jailbreak, Roadstar-“Ready to Go”, ZZ Top- “Gimme All Your Lovin”, Whitesnake-“Ready and Willing”, Jet-“Be My Girl”, Rainbow -“Long Live Rock and Roll”, The Cult-“L’il Devil”, Black Sabbath-“Paranoid” and more Ac/Dc- Sin City” with “Highway to Hell” closing the first set. It was an opener of “Rock Classics” to satisfy even the most die hard rock fan.

.

The “engine” of the band consists of Darryl (Daz) Harris on Drums- laying down the timing and percussion with power and precision and Rob Brooks on Bass Guitar standing in the middle of the stage, feet planted firmly on the ground, setting out the foundation for the two guitars with skilful expertise. On Rhythm Guitar is Paul Robinson (Robby), clearly enjoying the music whilst laying down a pattern of intricate cross riffs for the Lead Guitarist, Paul Marland. Here one has one of those deceptively “quiet” guitarists who, once they stand on stage, guitar in hand, demonstrate a thorough knowledge of their craft, playing the notes with dexterity, whether major or minor, to suit the song. Last, but certainly not least, is Simon Barton on Vocals. Simon, in my view, has one of those amazing voices that are so well suited to the Rock genre-able to pitch it at whatever range the set list requires, using power or subtlety dependent on the needs of the song. All this blends to create a unit that produces an excellent overall sound - Rock at its very best.

It is, perhaps important to say here that Simon was that night suffering from a virus which made his performance all the more impressive. His high temperature was not helped, I would think, by having the Legendary Rosie dancing in front of him most of the night, along with ‘Lex, who showed why she is known as “Flexi L’il Dancer” and a now fully fledged “Rock Chick”!!

During the half time break, due to this writer having been up dancing for nearly all the first set, there was little time to chat, as it was off outside for smoke time!! However, as previous conversations have involved “crotchless leather Lederhosen”, Chimpanzees and rather rude “sandwich boards” it can be seen the band certainly do not lack a sense of humour!!!

The second set was a substantial portion of more Rock Classics, featuring the likes of Ac/Dc-“Back in Black”, “The Jack”, “Let There Be Rock” and “Whole Lotta Rosie”, the Cult-“Sanctuary”, Guns’n’Roses-“Welcome to the Jungle”, “Sweet Child o’ Mine”, and “Paradise City”, Rolling Stones-“Brown Sugar”, Sympathy for the Devil, Led Zeppelin-“Rock and Roll”, “Whole Lotta Love”, Metallica - "Sandman", Motorhead-“Bomber”, “Ace of Spades” and finishing off with Lynyrd Skynyrd-“Freebird” it ensured a full and happy dance floor, with very few people standing (or sitting) still. It was, of course, inevitable after such a storming set that “More!!” would ring round the pub and, accordingly we were treated to a rare cover of “Whiskey in the Jar” by Thin Lizzy, but in the style of Metallica, guaranteed to cause many a sore neck the morning after!!

The general consensus was that this was a brilliant “first night” by the band, with all who were there looking forward to their return as soon as possible. This writer would add that it follows in a long line of top bands provided by at what is now a very well established and respected Rock Venue. Long may it continue!!

Myspace Layouts at Pimp-My-Profile.com / Guitar

Out on Bail escaped around 1930 and played there first gig 2 hours later at half past nine.

Take 2: The band was formed in the 1980s and today boasts three founder members of that band - Paul Marland on lead guitar, Simon Barton on vocals and Darryl Harris on drums.

The band enjoyed a few successful early years, culminating in an appearance at the Band on the Wall, Manchester (when it was THE place to play). As with a lot of bands at that time, Out On Bail began to struggle due to a lack of venues as pubs became obsessed with karaoke and self contained “artists” i.e. a mic and backing tracks. It was also the beginning of the “theme pub” era when every pub big enough to put on a band started transforming the place into eateries with bikes and watering cans on the walls etc. Also, the desire to hear classic rock in the nineties was perhaps waning amongst the general week-end boozers.

Inevitably the band went into exile. Simon carried on singing with various bands, Paul went off to sample hops and Darryl played on a little longer before putting his sticks into temporary retirement.

In the late 90s Darryl stumbled into Paul Robinson, who he‘d played in a band with at school in the 70s, and they discussed starting a band. The pair joined forces with some wrinkly old rockers from Oldham and formed Jagged. They played for a couple of years with Paul on reluctant vocals.

Darryl became restless with the lack of ambition of the band and when he heard the growing rumour that Out On Bail were reforming he left. Paul followed shortly afterwards after being secretly auditioned, and Out on Bail were reformed with the 3 original members plus Paul on rhythm guitar and Simon Garlick on bass. They played their first return gig at The Gardeners Arms, Oldham in the summer of 2006, the scene of their very first gig many many years earlier.

All was going well when towards the end of 2007 Simon Garlick quit the band sighting the long tours, loose women and late nights as the reason. Plus he’d had one television set too many fall on his head. He was eventually replaced by a deliriously happy Rob Brooks who was transferred from “Grim Beaver” for an undisclosed fee. Rob couldn’t give a stuff what music he played as long as he could enjoy the very things which forced Simon to pack it all in.

With pubs finally seeing sense and opening their ears once again to classic rock music (and in the process finally ridding themselves and their unsuspecting punters of Whitney Houston wannabe’s avec backing tapes) a renaissance for good rock cover bands is at last happening and Out On Bail are at the forefront.

So here we are enjoying an Indian summer, playing to bigger audiences than ever before and we aren’t quitting until we’re all bald, deaf, daft and worthless..... so just three of us to go then. This is not the beginning of the end but the end of a very long beginning.

Hi Out On Bail, Your reflections bring happiness that rends naked glass. The music that flows from your instruments overwhelms me with creativity. Your intoxicating reflection can but incorporate freely into the powerful surface of a disintegrating mirror set afloat upon a swarm of locusts. May you be as vivid as your hallucinations. I love your eyes, I know they can stare through my thoughts. Please let me hear more of that wonderful sound. As the bliss slowly rises in my incandescent eluxulator, your mere presence has a euphoric effect upon me. Your layers of absinthe and torsion form concretions of hyper-alimentation. Panoramic aromavision is the future. Cities crumble, skies ignite spontaneously in your presence. Your eyes show as many deep and full shades of fire as a volcano in heat. I desire to see life through your hallucinations so that they massage my viscera into an eternal state of turgid flux. You turn the atmosphere ablaze with currents of sweet ethylene when you smile. Your beauty is equal to the smoothness of a polished gem.
