Born on the West side of Harlem to Dominican parents, O.V. (O. Vicious
for his unique flow) is a mixture of Harlem’s best collard greens with
the best platanoes (plantains) the Dominican Republic could produce. In
a secured tone he states, “I’m from the most famous hood on earth.
I’ve done everything in Harlem from going to school to hitting the
streets. Top that with knowing where I come from has made me the man I
am today, a Leader!”
In a world where rappers out number rodents by a distinct margin only a few make it to the top. Some have the talent, but lack the drive. Others
have the talent, but are missing appeal. Most just don’t have
“IT”! Needless to say, this particular individual has no Achilles’
heel.
With a production entitled ‘LLEGUE’, which is Spanish for ‘I’ve
Arrived’…, signifying his long awaited presence, he promises not to
disappoint. The album contains both English and Spanish compositions
mixed with a precise blend of beats that compliment his powerful voice.
This compilation of O.V. narratives will sooth the savage music beast
and show what kind of a difference a creative mind can make. “I love
music. Everything else is secondary. I tend to push the envelope on all
levels to show that there’s more to me then just rhymes. There are
reasons as well.”
What started out to be a drive to be a sports journalist turned into
becoming a potent rhyme artist after his younger brother Omar convinced
him to collaborate on a song together. A few days after, he laid down
his first written verse and hasn’t stopped ever since. His brother
retired shortly afterwards.
After years of refining his craft by rhyming on street corners, battling
in front of local barbershops, and assisting others with their own
projects, 2007 proved to be his coming out party. From filming a movie
entitled ‘Shades of Blue’ directed by Frank Cruz early in the year(
where he plays a hit man and no, he doesn’t die the first 5 minutes
into it…) and then touring overseas in June proved that true stars
couldn’t be held back for long.
In such a small period of time, he has turned Uptown, Manhattan, upside
down and has taken the Dominican Republic by storm. Following the strong
buzz his First single, ‘Ay Mama’ remix and his newest anthem ‘Eso
Ehh’ have garnered in the Dominican Republic, O.V. has been able to
bring Hip-hop, Spanish Hip-Hop and Reggaeton to a higher level. With
every T.V. and radio station reaching out to him, the whole country was
able to see and hear what the craze has been all about. “I had fans at
the airport; my first live televised interview was at the airport! After
that, straight to San Pedro De Macoris to do more live television
followed by radio interviews back to back. That, right there, showed me
I was in for something special.”
“Sabado De Corporan”, a LIVE- nationally televised show in Santo
Domingo and broadcasted in the U.S., was the next stop the following
morning. Three songs and an unprecedented 15minute interview later with
Corporan De Los Santos, the phones couldn’t stop ringing. With the
country’s leading beer company Presidente lending their support, La
Romana, Higuey, and Santiago were among the next cities to feel the
impact. “I was only there a week and the demand was overwhelming. I
did every show humanly possible, performed in as many venues as I could.
I know people who have gone there and didn’t get that love. I guess
real does recognize real.”
The climax of the trip was performing in front of his father’s
hometown of San Pedro de Macoris. With a sea of thousands facing him on
a warm Sunday night, controlling the crowd was not an issue. “I was
told before my performance that people came out to see me that night. I
guess closing the show didn’t convince me enough, but when I saw
people singing my songs, it was the only stamp of approval I needed!”
He exclaimed. “The best part about it all, I got the whole trip on
tape!”
Upon returning to the states, guest appearances alongside Congressman
Charles Rangel at the Dominican Day Parade and after party performances
showcased to the people of New York that what they saw on T.V. wasn’t
a fluke. “I am there next to him at every performance and my eyes
water up because I see the dream come alive,” his father and Director
of Overseas Affairs Antonio expressed. “I am extremely proud!”
No stranger to charity, O.V. has donated school supplies to facilities
that lack in that area over seas. Every August he hosts The Annual O.V.
Softball Barbeque and Block Party Weekend on 139th & Amsterdam in N.Y.,
and he also mentors kids. “I love my block and I love my hood. A lot
of these kids’ fathers are my close friends, but they are all locked
up. They had no one to look up to. Thru my music and actions I know I
serve as the person to fill that void. Trust me, their fathers are
appreciative. I have letters to prove it.”
With three movies under his belt including an MTV Indy film called
‘The Way station: Prelude’ directed by Austin Reading, an album
ready to drop early 2008, and accompanied by more movie scripts
expectations are high for this Unsigned artist, but O.V. wouldn’t have
it any other way. “I work hard and when you work hard, cover all the
bases, what’s left is to score,” he says with an infamous smile.
“I’m already on third base!” Now, it’s time to bring it on home.
Stay tuned…
