Dakota Clark, aka “Oven Rake,” plays electronic music through an old Nintendo Game Boy and a speaker attached to his coat at Bumbershoot on Monday, September 1, 2008. Clark, who is from Puyallup, said he bought a program from a Finnish website that turned his Game Boy into a techno-instrument.
Of all the acts I saw at this year’s Bumbershoot festival, this one was the weirdest (yes, weirder than Saul Williams and even Australia’s Strange Fruit). I’m not a big fan of techno music, and I’m even less of one today thanks to Oven Rake. But, people seemed to be genuinely curious about what Clark was doing and how he was making the music with the vintage portable video game.
