About me: The Greater Overbrook String Band was organized in 1930 and first appeared in the Philadelphia Mummers New Year's Day Parade on January 1st,1931 under the name of the 69th Street String Band. Then in 1939 the name was changed again to the Whitman String Band until 1952. From 1953 to present The Whitman String Band changed their name to the Greater Overbrook String Band.
The band is one that has traveled to hundreds of cities throughout the United States and Canada since it's formation and has traveled internationally visiting Cuba, Italy, Ireland and just recently invited to do a five city tour og China. The band is the only mummers band to appear on national TV with it's appearance in the Fiesta Bowl Parade in Phoenix,Arizona and the only mummers band to appear in the Music Across America Parade held in Washington DC.
The Band has become a leader in the string band division because of it's innovative each year such as; BALLROOM REFLECTION, MY MUSICAL JEWELERY BOX, WINTER WONDERLAND, CUBAN PETE, SWAMP FIRE RHYTHMS, STARS STRIPES AND MUSICAL BLUES and PLAYING THE PALACE which have made the band a leader in both music and presentation within the string band division today.
